ReadyNas Duo V2 setup nightmare

Postby brewster0101 » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:32 pm

Hi , my first attempt to set up a Netgear NAS box and quite possibly my last ,

Trying to set up a new duo V2 with one Samsung F1 750Gb hard drive. This works fine in a Synology and D-link Nas box and has no bad sectors - perfect working order.

On first installation attempt Raidar gave me corrupt root error. Then reading though the hardware manual I did a factory reset. This give me a bad disk error and the LED 1 just flashes blue.

I read on this forum that because I have used the drive in other NAS boxes that the partitions maybe confusing the Duo, so I deleted the partitions in windows and ran factory reset, same
bad disk error.

Is it an actual issue with the hard drive because its not on the supported list? I've read alot of negative reviews on the US Amazon page with people having set up issues.

Can anyone offer any suggestions before I sent it back for a different make... Thanks

It could very well be that you are experiencing problems because its not on the Compatibility List, if you have done a factory reset and its still no go and you are sure the drive is ok i would look at trying another drive, i have a drive that is not on the hcl but it works flawlessly its the gamble you take.

Just to clarify the factory reset is to hold the reset button while turning on, select LED 1 only and then press reset button again. How long should a factory reset take? I can't believe a modern device is so fussy over what hard drive you use - especially as other makes aren't fussy.

It could be a bad disk or an incompatible one. Testing the drive using the disk manufacturer's tools would be the way to find out if the drive is dead.

Competing NAS offerings also have compatibility lists. Some drives don't work well in RAID arrays. Particularly some WD Green disks which have "green" features. Things like disks putting themselves to sleep and then as a result being considered dead aren't good.

Are you sure you have the v2?: How to tell whether I have a Duo v1 or Duo v2 or NV+ v1 or NV+ v2

Factory default may take a while but you can monitor the progress in RAIDar (http://www.readynas.com/downloads)

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Hard drive 100% tested ok. Defo got Duo V2 (USB 3 on the back)

When the RAIDar stated bad disk, the LED 1 drive light is constantly blinking blue - is it possible its still setting up? Also my unit won't power down without taking out the power cable.

What do you see when you hover the mouse over that LED? What about the volume LED?

What about when you look at what I mentioned using the RAIDar software?

Right so after deleting all partitions and doing a slow format in windows I went for a factory restart.
First status from Nas box is Booting, - 30 seconds
Then testing Disks , green flashing light on hard drive on RAIDar - 60 seconds
Then went to installing, Green LED constantly on - 2 minutes later I was able to enter setup :D :D :D

Setting up JBOD as I type.

I think my problem was that when I deleted all the partitions before , there was 8mb stuck unallocated. I used disk management in windows 7 to merge this and formatted.

Fussy unit innit.

While I have peoples attention I am having an issue with the inbuilt backup software.

I want to set up a backup schedule from my E drive, I am selecting by backup source type as Volume, Name Volume C (this is my only option) , when browsing for path, it seems to get stuck on refreshing/searching. ?

How do I get the Host number of my computer... ? Three evenings I've spent on this trying to just get the dam thing working and creating a backup. Worst NAS box I've ever had to set up.
