Volume (and shares) Lost on ReadyNAS Duo! (#11309243)

Postby Palinus » Tue Feb 09, 2010 3:07 am

I have a ReadyNAS Duo with 2 1TB disks in Flex-Raid 0 mode (two independent single disks, no redundancy).
So I had volume C in bay 1 with some shares and volume D in bay 2 with other shares.

I bought 2 2TB disks to upgrade my NAS.

I removed the old disk D and installed the new 2TB in bay 2.

I created a new volume and new shares. I backed up from bay 1 (old 1TB disk) to bay 2 (new 2TB disk).
I wanted to do the same with the old 1TB disk D and the other new 2TB disk.

But first I tried to see if everything was running as before the upgrade. So I removed my new 2TB from bay 2 e reinstalled my old 1TB disk in bay 2 as it was before, but... the ReadyNAS didn't recognized it as volume D and it seems I have lost all my shares.

I made a volume rescan, but nothing happens.

Please, help me to recover my files....

PS Ok, next time first I will make a backup via USB!

Bad idea to try and move back to smaller capacity disks. Hopefully you can power down and put the 2TB drive back in and things will work fine.

Thanks, but I am not interested in the new 2TB... it's a backup of my old C.
The problem is that I lost all the files from my old bay 2 1TB disk (volume D)!!! What happened to my shares?

A single disk volume and the disk is removed and you can't access the data anymore. It is a big no-no to replace a disk with a smaller capacity disk. Also if you put the replacement disk in while the NAS is on it will be wiped.

In frontview I see my old 1TB disk D as available for creating a new volume. 929 GB free... so I think it has been formatted.
Is it possible to restore my old data with some disk recovery utility software?

If it's been formatted, the data is gone. Your best bet is to contact technical support (see Online Submission link in my sig), and ask for help to recover data off your 2TB disk. Refer to this thread and post your case number here.

"Backing up" to the same device is not a true backup. See this article for more information. I'd advise you to backup to another device e.g. USB disk, NAS etc. in the future and preferably keep a backup off-site.

I've contacted the technical support and this is the case number: 11309243

If someone has some other ideas....
For example would it be a good idea to try with one of the softwares suggested in this thread (viewtopic.php?f=64&t=37800&start=0)?
Thank you

It's two days that I'm running R-Studio utility software for recovering files from my HD (I put the HD in a USB dock and connected to a Windows PC). I think it will finish tomorrow.
Anyway, if it will succeed, will I see the volume and shares from a Linux machine with Ubuntu (if I connect the disk through the USB dock)???
In this case I could make a backup copy (or two...) of my data before trying to re-install the new 2TBs disks.
Many thanks
