NV 4x1TB -> 4x2TB nightmare! (#10777660)

Here's what I have done so far

I have a readynas NV
It has 4x1TB (xraid) 4.1.6

1) I bought 4 new 2TB drives
2) Replaced each drive one at a time
3) Rebuilt successfully after each drive replacement
4) RAID begun expansion after 4th drive was put in.
5) Never properly expanded
6) Found out I had the wrong block size so, I would need to do a factory reset (a very old device)
7) Backed up ALL data to external hard drives
Factory reset
9) Rebuilt okay
10) Restored old config
11) Became unresponsive
12) Factory reset again -- unresponsive -- says root corrupted
13) USB reset -- looks like it works.
14) reboot, I get two LEDs blink, then four LEDs, then two, etc...
15) check dimm -- seated okay
15) try tFTP reset -- loads up okay
16) upon reboot, it never comes back up.
17) reboot, I get two LEDs blink, then four LEDs, then two, etc...
18) USB reset -- looks like it works.
19) reboot, I get two LEDs blink, then four LEDs, then two, etc...

Please help. These are new drives, and work fine outside of the NAS with no problems. I'm at ends wit!

According to this document it means "Corrupted, do not mix used disks and cold boot up. In most cases, problem may be solved by OS reinstall with optional NAND recovery. Contact tech support before taking actions."

When you backed up the config, which version of firmware were you running? If the configuration settings are from an older version of firmware, this may be related to the problem.

My advice would be this:

1. Check each disk using vendor tools to confirm that they are okay:

2. While installed in PC, delete any/all partitions that may be on the disks.

3. Install one disk only in the NAS and perform a factory default (use USB/TFTP boot recovery, if required).

4. If the config settings are for the same version of firmware, restore the settings. Otherwise, you may want to manually recreate the desired settings.

5. Reboot and verify that all is working as expected. If so, proceed to hot-add each remaining disk (one-at-a-time) and wait for the process to complete before adding the next drive.

6. Upon successful addition of all disks, reboot again, verify expected functionality and restore data.

I've gotten to step 3, and performed the factory default (TFTP), however I'm still gettting corrupt root -- and I've tried this with a couple of disks. What next?

OK. This time the factory reset seems to have worked -- really I tried the exact same thing a number of times.

I did it with just one drive, and it came up quickly. I've added a second drive, and that's currently resynching. Once this is done, then I'll do the third and fourth. I hope it all works this time.

It's currently expanding to the third disk...

Configuration: X-RAID (Expandable RAID), 2 disks
Status: Initializing 7% complete, Time to finish 8 hr 59 min

So far, so good, but I've been here before. I've got my fingers crossed!

OK. I finished adding each drive, one at a time, and everything got added and expanded properly.

Then this morning -- before I placed any data on the readyNAS, I decided to reboot to make sure everything was working properly.

It wouldn't come up in my browser, so I launched RAIDar, and sure enough, I still have a corrupt root. Now, I don't know what to do from here. I've spent nearly two weeks waiting for data to copy, RAIDs to rebuild, etc -- all for something that should just work properly.

2TB drives are cheap (mine were ~$140 per drive), and available everywhere. I shouldn't need to feel like an early adopter by doing something the system was supposedly designed to do. All this shouldn't have even happened from the beginning.

What make/model 2TB drives are you using? Some drives are known to drop out of arrays (not just with ReadyNAS; it seems to be quite common).

Make sure the disks are on the HCL. At present only the Seagate is certified for the NV/NV+:

Can you also check the disks for errors in a SATA capable PC using vendor tools: faq.php#How_can_I_verify_that_my_disk_is_bad%3F

OK. I've run the SeaTools application on every drive, and they all passed without any problems at all. So, it seems the drives are okay. The drives are all Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives, model ST32000540AS. Please, what's the next step.

Remember, my data is currently backed up elsewhere, but I've been down for more nearly two weeks now.

I'm trying from a factory reset again -- one drive at a time. This time I'm not using any space reserved for snapshots and rebooting between each drive add. So far two drives have expanded and are working properly. Waiting on the third.

I don't really have any advice other than to download the logs regularly (it may contain some insight as to what's happening). Keep us posted.

I'll do that now, then after this third disk is done initializing, and then after a reboot. This initializing should be done in ~6 hours.

OK. I was going to attempt to grab the logs after the expansion of the data volume after the third disk initialized.

However, I'm now in some sort of repetitive loop where every couple of seconds the ReadyNAS web interface comes up with a box that says "Data volume has been successfully expanded to 3707GB" I click the box, and it does it's thing for a minute, then pops the box back up. RAIDar shows the icon under disk 2 blinking and the info says "Expanding". When I hover over in RAIDar it says resynch 0% complete, time to finish -99 minutes. I'm viewing it remotely so I can't pull the power. I also can't reboot via the web interface or pull the logs -- the interface isn't really responding since that text box keeps coming up.

I'm getting incredibly frustrated.

I've come home from work, and it's currently impossible to access the unit via the web GUI. The box keeps popping up, and RAIDar reports -99 minutes to go. It's been doing this for hours, so I'm rebooting...

Rebooted...

"corrupt root". Again.

Now I'm trying something different. I just put all 4 drives into the unit, and am doing a factory reset -- will try just standard RAID5.
