Hard drive "ticking", no disk activity

Postby Cab » Fri Jul 06, 2012 7:20 am

I've got an Ultra 2 here that's only a few days old. In it is a Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB drive.

The drive is "ticking", every half second, even though the disk isn't doing anything. In fact, the ticking stops when I get disk activity. I just started noticing this recently, and am unsure if it was there all the time or if it just started today. I did a factory reset (running 4.2.21) just to be sure I didn't break anything, and still the same.

Any idea what is causing this?

Thanks

It sounds like a mechanical malfunction on your hard drive. It might be the reader head thats damaged or maybe the engine of the disk.

If you can, run a disk check of some sorts and see if it fails. I'd contact the place where you bought it and ask if you can get a replacement unit, as if the disk fails, you can lose data if you only have that one disk

You should run diagnostics on the drive download here > http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely run a check on the disk.

Funny thing is, I let it run for a few hours and now the clicking is gone, at least for now.

Try the disc check. I'd just be on the safe side :P

Are you running your setup with one or two discs?

I had a Seagate external hard drive setup awhile back and when my drive started to go bad in the device, I heard a lot of clicks/ticks as it was sitting idle, and continued while I accessed the disks.
I agree with checking the diagnostics from Seagate.com (Seatools) listed above by HERBIEO.

Check the SMART+ information and see if you see anything out of the ordinary on the disks. Try to determine if it is disk 1 or disk 2. You may want to call into support to see about replacing the disks if you bought your ReadyNAS with drives in it.
