48HRs to know...readynas v1 or v2?

Postby cobellig » Mon Jul 30, 2012 1:27 am

Hi Guys,i read the FAQs and topics but i can't find lots of answers...i got the Readynas second hand and i have a couple of days to test this,if its not up to expectation it will go back!but i need to be quick...so if you can help with those simple(many) questions i'd really appreciate.

First off i was told this is V2 but the latest firmware i found via the Dashboard is 4.1.9 so...this means i have a V1? because i am pretty sure it Says V2 in its dashboard...

The back usb are black,as USB2 and not blue as USB3 in the specs....

I transferred 555Gb of mixed size data and i was writing at top 13Mbs...it took forever...reading and moving single files was going at 20-30Mbs...so it seems this speed is acceptable for this device?(Pc to Gigabit router is Cat5E and ,cat6 to the nas)

On one pc i can map the drive,on the other i cant..windows 7 64 both...is mapping a Nas's created drive possible?

Thanks

Gabriele

If you are running 4.1.9 firmware, then you have a V1 (and are using Frontview, not Dashboard). Speeds of 20-30 megabytes per second are typical (not sure if you are giving megabytes or megabits speeds). There is some more info here: (http://www.readynas.com/?p=310#Expect).

You should be able to map drives on both PCs. Try "net use" on the one that fails.

Having a duo v2 myself the usb ports on the back should be blue that is standard for usb3, printed on the front lower right corner of the unit it will say ReadyNAS Duo v2, and transfer speeds from pc to nas or vice versa i avg about 40-45 MB/s on a Gigabit network.

Just to back up what StephenB said, firmware 4.X.X means v1. 5.X.X means v2 and that is always the case. V1's can't use 5.X.X firmware.

Just to confirm:

V1 & 4.X.X looks like this: http://fredriklofter.com/wp-content/ima ... w_home.gif
V2 & 5.X.X looks like this: http://regmedia.co.uk/2012/01/17/netgea ... age_5a.png

Otherwise, the colour of the 2 USB sockets *on the back* are a good way to tell. If they are blue, then they are USB3 so V2. Otherwise, USB2 so V1. Note that the ports on the front are USB2 on both.

Yes its a V1.....i am not too happy about it but i did not think performance wise it made a huge difference on the network speed...if i move files between 2 pc itouch 70mb,on the nas is about 16-25Mb...so really far from your said-40-45(which would be great) i got this for half the new price so i think i will use it for now...even at this slow speed...and get a ultra 2 later maybe....
now i am getting a headhacke with users....somehow i find this all too difficult to setup, luckly i have years of raid experience LOL....

All i wanted is to map the share folder i made as network drive..in each pc..but i dont get the rights right...thanks for the help anyway guys!!

With Windows 7, try the credentials manager in the control panel. That lets you specify the logon/password used by that PC to access the NAS. If you don't have anything entered there, Windows will use the windows logon information.

Ok,created the users and those are now the ones which i use for the network drive mapped..indeed it was using some default logins but now is ok even after rebooting everything.I also thicked a box to give full read write to everyone.
Speedwise i am around 25mbs,not a dream but acceptable..when cash will be avl i think ultra 2 is the choice..i wonder how fast will that go! :)

glad you're sorted cobellig, this may help others though :

the v2 has the fan across the full width of the NAS
the v2 also has external power supply ( so less heat build up in the NAS itself )

the problem is nobody ever puts pics on ebay for the front and rear views of the v2

The V1 also has the external PSU.
I noticed the back of the unit has a groove where the power connector goes.

I am going to copy files back and forth from my laptop/nettop/server and see the speeds....this morning as breakfast i transferred 2,5 gb from nas to USB and it was going 6Mbs...hope is the USB limit...
Once i download a big file it will need to be moved to the NAS...if it takes so long each time is not gonna cut it!
