Does NV+ V2 support RAM Upgrade

Postby davidling » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:48 pm

I just bought a NV+ v2 and since it came with 256MB of RAM, I assumed it is upgradable to 1GB just like the others. I can't seem to find any instructions on upgrading the RAM anywhere and I ended up opening the box. There is no memory slot on top of the box like it existed for the NV+. Can someone let me know if the RAM is upgradable?

I don't think it's upgradable. Anyway NetGear does not support 3rd party memory upgrades on any ReadyNAS model. See http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=83

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

I know NetGear's memory upgrade policy, but the question is if NV+v2 memory can be upgraded regardless whether it is supportable or not. I know my old ReadyNAS duo v1 memory can be upgraded as well as the ReadyNAS NV+, I don't see anyway of upgrading NV+v2 and just looking for confirmation since it is not published anywhere.

Why not just follow v1's instructions and see if its in the same place as instructed. I'm just looking into what these upgraded devices do but so far other than chipset, it looks the same.

Just take plenty of pictures so you can put it back together and also document whats different.

No above it says "I don't think" . It doesn't say no it can't. Just because netgear doesn't support it, that just means someone hasn't opened the box and been the first to fudge thier new device when trying to replace their memory.

This is the quote sphardy was referring to.

So davidling had already tried your idea.

My apologies. So now that I read the slot doesn't exist anymore, Whats up there? Did they have enough people calling with problems to remove that ability? :slap: . I have no idea about how the Arm chips handle memory  . Only thing new I saw is that it was listed the v2 of this device had its power supply moved to external. If it existed in any form I'd try there.

I opened up my Duo v2 as well thinking RAM would be upgradable as my Duo v1.

Disappointed to see that it can't be upgraded... :(

I know this is a bit of an old thread but just wanted to post to say very disappointed that the ram isn't upgradeable.

I was seriously considering this as an upgrade for my duo v1. Problem is that that also came with 256mb ram, and would always crash when downloading large files with bit torrent. Upgrading the ram fixed this issue completely and boosted overall performance, so it was clear that 256mb is woefully insufficient for a Duo let alone this.

Shame, I was going to buy one, but I won't be getting another readynas if they've removed the ability to upgrade ram with the v2 :(

I have downloaded plenty of large files with transmission on my duo v2 and not had any problems with it crashing, maybe it manages the memory much more efficiently.

Hey randomnut,

While I do agree it's very disappointing that RAM is not upgradable, however, the performance is very good nonetheless.

I've had no problems in the last 6 months with the Duo v2. Excellent device. Keep the firmware upgrades coming!!!

Hmm perhaps the os uses less ram on the v2s?

If it's definite that torrents with transmission on the nv+ v2 are stable I might look into getting it, the unit can be got for £150 at the moment.

I presume that my 2 disks from my duo v1 cannot be transferred into the nv+ v2? I will have to do a backup to a usb drive and then restore the data to the nv+ once set up, and then format the disks from the duo v1?

I've been torrenting via the Duo v2 to an external USB drive and it's been working great. No issues. (Using the 3rd party Torrent addon).

Lastly, you are correct. The drives cannot be directly transferred into the new NAS. I also had to backup on an external disk before upgrading to the v2 from v1.

The Duo v2 does have a much faster CPU than the original Duo which I reckon would make a big difference.
