Using one UPS with an NV+ and an NV+ v2

Postby PerBKWine » Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:40 am

I recently bought my second NV+, this time a ReadyNAS NV+ v2, to add to the one I have which is NV+ (not v2).

I also have an APC UPS pack ES 550.

I have connected the NV+ v2 to the UPS and it recognises the UPS without problem. So this is the Master, from a UPS standpoint.

I now want to make the "old" NV+ a UPS Slave from the Master and try and do this by going to Frontview Power > UPS Configuration and select "Enable monitoring of UPS physically attached to a remote ReadyNAS" and enter the IP address of the Master (the NV+ v2).

(Both are connected directly to the UPS; are on the same network over a Netgear bridge; and have fixed IP addresses defined by the Netgear router/cable modem)

I then get an error message: "Could not connect to the specified UPS server. Please verify that UPS sharing is enabled on that system and try again".

However:

On the Master NV+ v2 I can find no such "UPS sharing" setting. Actually, there are no configuration at all for the UPS on the NV+ v2. (And if I want to do it the other way around, setting the old NV+ as UPS Master and the NV+ v2 as Slave that seems not possible either, there is no setting for the NV+ v2 to use another server as master.)

What do i need to do to share the same UPS between the NV+ and the NV+ v2? Or is that impossible?

I don't think is currently possible with the v2, certainly not via the UI. It is a feature I would like to see added.

Isn't that strange!! So I would need to have one UPS per file server then...

Is there any news on this? To me, it is a huge feature that is missing. Is it possible to configure it via the command line?

I was going to plug the USB cable into the NV+ v1 as that has far more on it atm. I will try that tonight, looks good, should be at least enough to let me figure it out. Thanks and thanks again.

I tried what I thought might work, but it didn't. I think we need to wait for the feature to be added hopefully in a future firmware update.

So just to confirm, there is no way to currently get it to work using either as the master?

There's probably more to it than that. You might need to read up on configuration of NUT. If you find a solution post it here.

I (think) have got my v2 connecting to the UPS server on the v1. The config system is messy but I'll keep working on it.

To Caustic & previous posters

From an electrical viewpoint, I am not happy about putting the 2 NAS's off the same UPS.
ES550 refers to 550VA, or 330Watts.
I would like you to pull out the mains 120V /230V feed to UPS, and simulate how much run time you have.
For one NAS you may have 10mins. For 2 NAS you may have 4 mins.

Is that enough time, to save and close your applications before powering down?

The way I read the chart you would get about 40 minutes for 1 NAS (50 watt load) and 21 minutes for 2 NAS (100 watt load). That is using the "typical" power numbers from the comparison chart for the NV+ v2. http://www.netgear.com/images/ReadyNAS_ ... -57079.pdf.

I have not tried pulling the plug with 2 NAS's yet and letting the battery run out, but with one it started the power down at 70% which was after 5 mins of battery time. I don't expect to keep using them when the power goes, I would want both to shut down asap. Besides, I get the same figures as StephenB, I am assuming that each NAS will pull 60W tops. Some HDDs use more than others so giving a bit of leeway. Also, the switch needs to be on the UPS as well, obviously, so that adds a few more watts. At 130W all in, it says 16mins. As far as I can see, that should be fine? Or have I missed something? There is no PC attached to the UPS. I don't care about my PC, only my ReadyNAS. :)

Just double checked, V2 is connected to V1. Variable changes on V1 are reported on V2. I set the V1 to shutdown at 90% battery and I pulled the plug. V1 started shutdown after 2 mins, and shutdown within 2 mins. However, the V2 didn't budge, even though it correctly knew it was running on battery power. Ideas? Is there a way I can send a test signal? What should the shutdown command be?

I don't have a V2, but I am thinking that for this to work the V1 shutdown threshold needs to be significantly longer than the V2 (so the V2 always reaches its threshold before the UPS server on the V1 shuts down).

BTW, I use a similar setup with my duo and nv+ (both v1) - they are my backup NAS. The Pro has its own UPS.

We had severe thunderstorms yesterday, with several momentary outages followed by lost power for a couple of hours. Investing in a UPS is definitely a good idea!

I couldn't agree more about an UPS being a good idea. Such a shame the v2 doesn't have the feature built in.

The v2 shouldn't have a shutdown threashold, surely. The V1 (the one monitoring the UPS, the master) should, then it hits the value set, it tells the other devices (the slaves) to shutdown. The spec says that the master will wait for all slaves to disconnect before it continues. But I will have to double check the logs to find where the system went wrong. I think I am getting a little out of my depth!

An update, I have found the command to send a test shutdown signal "upsmon -c fsd" and that worked. SSH into the V1, typed that, and both NAS and my PC (which I accidently had connected as well using WinNUT) all shutdown within a minute.

So, why doesn't pulling the power cable out work? Why does the V1 switch off, but the V2 just keep going?
