Community dead for NV+ V2 users?

Postby Newklear » Mon Aug 06, 2012 9:38 am

Hello,

I just bought my ReadyNAS NV+ V2 last week, and started looking into adding add-ons the other day, when i realized there aren't any for the ARM processor... I found Transmission, but not really much else.

Is there really such a small interest for this product, that there's no point in developing software for it?

A file manager for example would have been great, as it's a real pain having to use the backup jobs every time you want to move a file or folder.

Maybe I've missed something, maybe there's a secret vault of useful tools somewhere that I haven't found?
Because this is quite disappointing.

Also disappointed that the fan never stops spinning, even when there's no point for it to spin, but that's a whole other matter.

There are some community add-ons here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=147

There are more add-ons in development.

You can login to CIFS (e.g. \\ip.address.of.nas in Windows) as "admin", open the C share and move files within that.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Yeah, I've used the windows explorer to move a couple of smaller files, but when moving big folders (~500GB) I don't really want to do it with the windows file explorer, since that means I can't power down my stationary computer, and that kind of breaks the point of buying a NAS in the first place.

So weird that there's no file explorer...

I have had my NV+ v2 for about 8 months waiting for development of new addons. I think the lack of support and addons for the arm processor range is under any critisicm.
A good filemanager addon is especially needed but I have found a workaround using Midnight Commander from ssh shell. Please have a look at: https://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=60918#p365258

Yeah, that works i guess, even though it's slow and complicated.

Even more weird is that there was one, but it was later removed.

Can't imagine it's a security issue, especially since it's over https://. Anyone wanting a file manager ought to check out AjaXplorer. There is an issue with php and file sizes being reported incorrectly by default, and also the lack of ability to transfer files over 2GB in size. These issues/limitations are all to do with PHP if memory serves, but in each case there are work-arounds.

It also supports automatic updating and a whole raft of plugins, most of which i'll never need. But it's quite a comprehensive app in it's own right. Also supports user creation without needing to add guest accounts direct to the NAS itself. Highly recommended.

It's not out on ARM yet as a community add-on, but I bet a nice word in super-poussin's ear will soon fix that. :)

WhoCares has made AjaxExplorer for ARM, but if/when he will distribute it is the question.

Alot of my files are over 2GB in size though, so if it can't move those files it's kind of a dealbreaker :(

Can't help but wonder why they removed that built-in file explorer...

There's an issue in AjaXplorer with using PHP to calculate filesizes. There is a workaround to get over this which is discussed elsewhere on this site (Somewhere in the add-ons forums). I believe the issue is linked to what causes the trasmit failiure of files above 2GB, but cannot vouch for it as i've neither tried the workaround or tried transferring files of that size. The things I use the add-on for are alot smaller scale.

Well it's January, and the last post was October, and YES still no handy plugins for ARM devices, unbelievable.

Especially a File Manager which is needed badly on ARM.
