Disk Prep?

Postby semi_expert » Sat Apr 16, 2005 7:54 am

I just received my ReadyNAS 600 and 4 wd250 raid edition drives. After initial power up it appears that one of my disks is bad (green led turns to yellow) I've moved disk to another set of cables and the yellow led indicator follows the drive. Is there anything I need to do to "prep" this drive...reformat under windows, etc. I'd like to avoid waiting for replacement drive.

Thanks,
Fred

If you suspect that the disk is not bad, power off the NAS, disconnect the SATA cable from the disk, turn on the NAS, let it boot up all the way, shutdown the NAS, reconnect the disk, and turn on the NAS again. If the disk is good, data should be "re-sync'd" to the disk.

My suspicion is that the disk is probably bad, otherwise, it would have thought you "cold-added" the disk and automatically re-sync'd when you rebooted. But try the above and see if that works.

if you put new disks into barebone system, the 4th
disk led will be amber before resync done. if you
power down before resync done and shuffle disk,
the amber led will follow the disk.

if you are sure that resync should have been done
and still see amber led, then the disk may be dead.

please clarify your resync status

These were raw drives. I saw the yellow LED on drive #4and thought it meant a bad drive. I moved it to three and the LED for #3 went yellow. I don't recall reading anything about one drive being yellow when initializing. How long does it take to sync drives? Should I leave the drive in #3 slot?

Thanks for the heads up.

You can look at the FrontView management screen to see what the disk is doing. Go to the Status menu and click on Health tab.

Typically it'll take several hours to sync up your RAID, depending on disk size. The system is still usable during the time, but it won't be redundant until the sync process is done. You'll be able to get an approximate completion time through FrontView.

Well it's all sync'ed....all status indicators are green. I can see the NAS on my peer to peer Windows network on all other computers.

I cannot get the NAS to set up shares....keeps giving "error:no filesystem available for shares"

Any suggestions.

Thanks,
Fred

Fred, somehow your NAS seems like it didn't initialize properly. Since you have no data on it, let's get you getting back to factory default. Do the following:

1. Turn of the NAS.

2. On the back of the NAS, above and right of the slot, you'll see a pin-hole. This is the system reset switch. Use a clip and depress the switch while the NAS is powered off, and keep it depressed for 30 secs. while powering on. You'll see the drive lights blink green at 5 secs and then at 30 secs. Release the switch when you see the 2nd blink.

3. It'll take probably an hour or so to initialize to where RAIDar will detect the NAS, and then a few hours more for the NAS to finish syncing the RAID.

4. When you click Setup and login from RAIDar, go to the Share menu and see if you see a default "backup" share. If you do, you're set.

Let us know how it turns out.

The re-sync re-initialized did it. I'm setting up shares. Thanks for the help.
