Memory Upgrade for ReadyNas X6

Can someone share with me whether I can upgrade my X6 memory from 256M to 1GB?

What kind of performance are we expecting? 10% to 20%?

Memory upgrades, may make a small difference to performance, but this is likely to be negligible: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/performance/will_increasing_the_amount_of_memory_in_the_readynas_improve_performance

Memory upgrades are not supported and are not recommended. If your memory module is working fine I wouldn't replace it.

If you really want faster performance you should get a x86 ReadyNAS (e.g. Ultra, Pro). These have fast CPUs. Desktop x86 ReadyNAS come with 1GB RAM.

You can transfer your data across your network from a Sparc ReadyNAS (e.g. X6) to a x86 ReadyNAS.

You may see up to 10% performance boost, mainly due to more RAM for file cache available.

1GB modules were never really tested in this chassis, only up to 512MB. So YMMV.

My X6 is Rev A. I use it to stored all my high definition movies (average 8Gb per movie).

When i watch those 1080p movies streaming directly from X6, the pictures occasionally distorted or not smooth.
But if i watch those around 4GB 720p, the pictures are smooth.

So, I hope by increasing the memory to 512MB or 1Gb, it will improve the streaming quality.

Please run the memory test a few times before trusting a memory upgrade.

I successfully upgraded my X6 Rev A to 512M DDR PC2100 chip.

Write speed improved from average 17MBps to 21MBps, about 20% improvement.

Much smoother when streaming HD movie too.

Too bad tat it didn't support 1GB memory.
