I have 12 of these drives in my 3200, they all came loaded up with 04.01G01 firmware and appear to be working fine.

I've been running this configuration now for just over a month, and have been closely monitoring the SMART+ stats to make sure nothing looks off, especially the load cycle count that the older revisions/firmwares of these drives have been notorious for reporting large numbers for.
I see nothing that would indicate any potential problems, and I would recommend these drives to anyone looking for a cheaper enterprise class disk (or green/enterprise as the case may be.)

I'm not 100% sure what to do, as I am not sure I can source the older gen, or whether my isue is the fact I have mixed drives (WD2002FYPS)

Under Status > Health > SMART+ what is the drive firmware for the WD2002FYPS disks (e.g. 4.05G05)?

Perhaps try running the "Test Disks" boot option: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=252

I might try that tonight. I've contacted WD support to see what else I can do. I might pull the new drive and do a Bonnie++ test without it and see how that goes as well..

A resync will be needed if you put the new drive back in again if you do that.

For what it's worth, the performance for my disks seems acceptable.

Granted there are 12 of them and they're all the same drive/firmware revision, but I can sustain reads/writes in the 105MB/s+ range over my network with larger files (for NFS anyways, CIFS seems to be somewhat slower.)

Code: Select all
# dd bs=1048576 count=8192 if=/dev/zero of=file.dat
8192+0 records in
8192+0 records out
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 78.375 s, 110 MB/s

# dd bs=1048576 count=8192 if=file.dat of=/dev/null
8192+0 records in
8192+0 records out
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 80.6695 s, 106 MB/s

Oh wow, how stressful was last night... I pulled one of my first drives and upgraded the firmware (after shutting the NAS down) but the NAS has rebooted and I hadn't noticed so technically I pulled a live drive (which I did not notice until I got back from work with my newly firmware upgraded drive)

Shutdown the NAS, reinserted the new (firmware) drive and was going to let it resync, but for some reason the NAS kept trying to reboot (starting to curse the new(ly purchased) drive. Had to SSH and kill the reboot process, and with Frontview giving me all sorts of weird errors perform a firmware (raidiator) reinstall but still funny issues but at least the NAS wasn't rebooting

Reinserted the failed drive and let it resync, but after that finished, it started the process again, so once again, rebooted the NAS, and this time the sync ran fine over night (phew!!)

Did a Bonnie++ test this morning and now it's going faster than ever.. don't figure....

Just for kicks I tried running some speed tests on the unit itself (to remove any network overhead/slowdowns,) and the results are fairly surprising:
Code: Select all
# dd bs=1048576 count=8192 if=/dev/zero of=file.dat
8192+0 records in
8192+0 records out
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 41.4068 seconds, 207 MB/s

# dd bs=1048576 count=8192 if=file.dat of=/dev/null
8192+0 records in
8192+0 records out
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 22.2811 seconds, 386 MB/s

Maybe I should look into NIC teaming. :)

Yes NIC teaming could be good. I'd use 802.3ad LACP if your switch supports it (a good managed switch should). If two NICs aren't enough for the 3200 you can purchase a couple of extra gigabit NICs using a PCIe add-on card.

Faster than it's ever been, and no reasonable reason.. I'm done a firmware re-install before.. maybe 4.2.15 is a lot better than it's previous incarnations

Just purchased a new RE4-GP WD2002FYPS drive (to replace a new Seagate Constellation ST32000644NS that began to have a rising Reallocated Sector Count after less than a week).

The new WD drive also has the extension "-02W3B0." I assume that it has the new version of the firmware, but have not put it in the ReadyNAS Pro yet.

Do we have official word from Netgear's compatibility list gurus that this disk's firmware is acceptable?

Thanks.

Can anyone tell me to outcome of this drive, WD2002FYPS-02W3B0? I just received two from Amazon but have not opened them yet. Should I return them?

Re: WD2002FYPS-02W3B0: So far so good

Postby Blues » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:56 am

I installed the -02W3B0 drive about a week ago. So far there are no reallocated sectors, the temperature has remained well within the stated parameters (~38 or 39 C), and there's no difference in the noise level.

This is in a ReadyNAS Pro Business that's two plus years old. I'm running the latest version of the OS and I've had no problems at all with the new drive. It's in a mix with three other WD2002FYPS drives. One is the -01U1B1 (running 4.05G05) and the other two are -01U1B0 (running 4.05G04). I have had no way to upgrade the firmware so the ReadyNAS is on 24/7.
