Reason for failure:
Unable to access remote path //M2N32-SLI/My Documents.
since it was only one computer, it couldnt be the readynas; then i remembered i installed acronis true image home 2009 about then. i had been searching for a good program to pull the entire image off the various computers in case of a virus/disk crash/etc. And this one was rated well and seemed to work fine. i even used the program to restore something across the network from the nas, and that worked as well.
but now it seems it was the culprit; i deinstalled, and everything was right again. [using frontview/backup/test interface; fails with it installed, passes with it uninstalled]
this doesnt make sense, and it may be some interaction with the frontview backup, but....fyi.
 i just remembered, i had the same problem with norton 360 v2 about 6 months ago.
