Technical description of ReadyNAS Photos

I would like to know technical details how ReadyNAS Photos works.

Especially the purpose and interfaces between each of these:
* ReadyNAS Photos daemon (addon) in the NAS
* Java app in PC
* local host server in PC running the Java app
* readynasphotos.com

Then, explain how images stored in my local NAS that is behind and NAT/firewall can be accessed from the internet? This backdoor makes me feel very unhappy - I have sensitive work data on the NAS and cannot trust the system anymore.

I know there are a lot of Mac users that are happily unaware how things work - but for the rest of us please put a technical description of on readynas.com

That's probably unlikely to happen(there's other things that need to be done). If you're worried about an optional service such as readynas photos possibly being a security issue for you, turn it off.

I've been curious and searching for an answer about this subject too .... especially about how readynasphotos.com has access to the photos stored on the NAS.

There are a few technologies that are able to allow access to NAT-protected devices without opening up holes in firewalls or port-forwarding, etc. Here's one example:

Who knows? Maybe ReadyNAS Photos uses a similar technology.

I will... I might be paranoid but I bet NSA has forced Dekoh to put a backdoor into the protocol so that they can remote monitor every NAS in the world in order to capture terrorists.

ReadyNAS Photos desktop connects to ReadyNAS device by mounting the network shares. This is no different from how you access the shared directories on the NAS using Windows Explorer.

ReadyNAS device also houses the Database which is read by both ReadyNAS Add -On and the Desktop software. Apart from the database, and accessing the network shares, there is no other interface of communication between the Desktop client and the Add-On.

ReadyNAS Photos desktop, can only be accessed from the PC that is running it.

No, it suggests we're probably not going to take the time to do a write up like wessen requested because there's other things to be done.

If you only need CIFS access to your sensitive data, don't enable FTP, NFS, etc. If you want to be as secure as possible, you need to be as restrictive as possible.

And no, there''s no "backdoor" for the NSA, IRS, NFL, FBI, NBA, NHL, CIA, or otherwise.
