Iomega Ultramax 500GB works (update - NOT WORK)

Postby mikemcfarlane » Fri Sep 25, 2009 5:22 am

Hi, I got my Iomega Ultramax 500GB USB/FW400 desktop harddrive to work for USB backups, with a ReadyNAS NV+. Had some problems formatting the drive as EXT3 via the ReadyNAS browser front end, but used MacOSX Drive Utility to format the drive as FAT32 (it was HFS+), then went back into the browser front end and could then reformat the drive as EXT3. Backup running now......
See second posting.

HFS+ can't be used by the ReadyNas so maybe that was causing problems for trying to format it as EXT3. Other explanations are also possible.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Hi, thanks for comment. The backup job failed in the end. Also failed with my normal back up software when the drive was plugged into my mac via USB, but appears to be OK with a firewire connection? Possibly a power saving mode in the drive? Can't find anything on Iomega website about it. Drive is definetly not compatable as far as I can tell.

The USB drive list isn't updated I guess because there's too many drives to test.

If you use e.g. SeaGate FreeAgent drives you have to hook the drive up to a computer and set the sleep timer to never, so maybe you'll need to do try and do something like that with the iomega if it is able to work.

Re: Iomega Ultramax 500GB works (update - NOT WORK)

Hi, that was what I was looking for on the Iomega site. There were also some corrupt files on the ReadyNAS that were screwing things up (fixed them now)! I'm now so tired with looking at it. Having in the past had two backup drives fail in a week leaving 7 years of work on one drive I get pretty stressed about data backups. And I'm now off leaving for a trip for two weeks without an offsite backup of my data. I just wanted to get an up to date offsite backup before I went. Maybe I should have multiple offsite drives. Great. Where does this end? Anyway, thanks for your comments.

Multiple drives could be good. You can never have too many backups. I've got a ReadyNas off-site. I need to bring it home to do my monthly backup soon. I'd prefer to have 3 ReadyNas rather than two but that's a bit too expensive.

Think in the end the drive may have been OK. .DS_Store files were creating probs for me, see this thread
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=20965&hilit=.DS_Store%3A+No+such+file+or+directory
Fixed this and it solved a few probs, so I guess the backup may now work.
Probably just going to backup offsite to DVD, at least if one or two fail I will still have most of the data - serial redundancy?
