This is concerning. It shouldn't be doing this.

Just a long shot, but could you try a memory test: faq.php#Is_there_a_way_I_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good%3F

OK. I tried RAID5, and I am STILL at "CORRUPT ROOT" I've sent two sets of logs off to Netgear (one from during the rebuild, and one from after the rebuild, but during the sync) It seemed to work this time, so I created a couple of shares, and begun to start copying data to the NAS. However after just a couple of minutes the shares became inaccessible vis SMB/CIFS, though I could still access the device through the web interface. Well, at least I thought I could. No matter what I clicked or changed, didn't affect anything, and I couldn't reboot via the GUI.

It finally stopped responding, so I rebooted the device using the power button.

It came back up as "corrupt root" again.

Ug...

I can no longer pull logs from the device.

Have you tried the memory test? Do you have the stock memory module installed?

Not sure. I think it is fine -- well I ran the memory test, and I'm not sure if it ran all the way through or not, but then the readyNAS rebooted itself, and then began blinking the first two green LEDs, then all four, then the first two, then all four...

This is a 1GB memory upgrade from the original memory, but I've been running with this for nearly 4 years.

Do you remember which memory you are using? i.e. make and model.

If you still have the stock 256MB RAM module could you try putting that in the ReadyNas and seeing if you still get the corrupt root error?

OK. So I did a factory reset again from USB (held down the back reset button for 20+ seconds on reboot), and let it go from there. I started with all four drives in, and set it up as an XRAID. The unit seemed to go through the paces, and everything SEEMED to be working. I changed the IP from dynamic and the hostname, and enabled jumbo frames. Then I rebooted the device. Upon reboot, it's no longer acessible in the web, and now RAIDar shows the firmware as 4.01c1-p6 -- no clue how this happened. The USB stick I have, has the most recent firmware, and the drives were wiped clean with all partitions removed before this latest attempt.

Also, the Netgear support hasn't gotten back to me in almost 4 days, so I'm pretty much left hanging with $800 in drives, and a unit that seems not to accept them no matter what I do.

I wondered about this firmware version too. Apparently it is 4.1.6, just written using the old format. See viewtopic.php?f=35&t=36018

Did you try using the stock standard memory (256MB)?

I haven't checked the memory model, but I looked around for the stock memory and it seems I no longer have it. Though, before I started using the new drives I had at least 4 years of reliable usage.

So, last night I rebooted the device, and RAIDar showed it as booting, and the power light was slowly fading on-off. This morning it is still showing the same behavior (not sure if it was a disk check or something). I will attempt to reboot again.

And here are my logs from after what I thought was my latest successful attempt: http://www.linenberg.com/System_log_xraid_all_4_at_once.zip. This was before any reboots.

I received a replacement memory module -- though a 512MB one -- from a friend in our company's IT department. I then swapped out my 1GB module for this 512MB one, and ran the factory setup again: RAID-X with all four drives in it. It seems okay-- but I've been here before. I'm going to create some shares and reboot, and see what happens once I start copying data...

OK. So now, I am copying data from a wired connection, and after about 1.3GB of data, it said "Device no longer accessible". The readyNAS could not be accessed via the web interface or via the SMB/CIFS share. I had gotten to this point in the past, but this time I had already installed the ssh add-on. I ssh'd to the device, and rebooted it that way.

It came back up fine, and then I again started copying data. Again, the data copy crapped out, and when I tried to access the readyNAS via the web GUI, it kept giving me "RAID sync starting" messages over and over, and over...

Also, when I now try and pull down the logs I get:
Code: Select all
"This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

<payload>Empty No Support</payload>"

Could someone please help me? Is there any solution for my problems? The official support has been so far unhelpful.

Are you running 4.1.6? Can you try doing a remote or local update in Frontview (do local update if currently running 4.1.6) to 4.1.6?

Can you check to see if it's related to this:

OK. So, I was able to pull the logs (found here: http://www.linenberg.com/System_log_latest.zip, and configure it a bit. Then I tried the update that I downloaded from http://www.readynas.com/?p=2620 and it rebooted as 4.01c1-p6 and was pretty much unresponsive in the web GUI. I tried to copy files to the unit, and it locked up again. Upon reboot I got "corrupt root again".

I then did a factory reset, once again, and set it up as X-RAID with all four drives in the device. Netgear now has gotten back to me with a remote tech support mode request. I have configured the unit for this, and am waiting on them.
