So what do I need to do to make the Vault work?

So what do I need to do to make the Vault work?

Postby wpns » Wed Feb 17, 2010 4:11 pm

[I apologize in advance if my frustration is showing through in this missive, but I'm at my wit's end here.]

I've got a client who is using a ReadyNAS NV as a file server and wants exactly what Vault does. I was unsuccessful setting it up at her location, so I tried to set up one of my RNen at my office.

I'm running the latest firmware:
ReadyNAS NV [X-RAID]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043]

I installed the 2.0.9 release of the Vault addon. Is this the right release? The vault home page points at 1.1.2...

Anyway, set up a trial account, told it to back up /c/Backups/Dobby-System
with the exception of a couple of early "can't find the file" errors due to symbolic links, it's never done anything.

The backup job is set to Continuous

I've disabled Vault, rebooted the ReadyNAS, and re-enabled Vault to no avail.
Account usage shows zero bytes
Current backup activity shows "Scanning"
Backup report shows No Report Available
Error report used to show a few files that can't be backed up (symbolic links), but now shows No Report Available

Access Your Files shows that it's created /c/Backups/Dobby-System/var/yp with a modification date of 2/14 at 1:26AM but there are no files there or anywhere else.

I posted a note in this forum earlier asking which version was the latest, and got no response.

I opened a ticket with Netgear, who told me to send the details of the problem to vaultsupport@elephantdrive.net

I sent an Email to vaultsupport@elephantdrive.net and (three business days later) have not even received an acknowledgment of my support request.

Is there a solution to this, other than to build a couple of DIY RAID-1 NAS drives and set them up to ssh/rsync over the Internet? My client really wants the professional, supported, reliable solution, but I don't seem to be finding it with Vault. She'd be spending a couple of hundred bucks a month with the Vault, but not if we can't make it work or get a response from any tech support anywhere.

This is the latest, I think. The x86 version would not have worked if you tried that. You can take a look at this page for add-ons for the NV. See also instructions for installing a Frontview add-on and ReadyNas Vault Setup Instructions

If you purchase two ReadyNas NVX (not Pioneer), Pro Business Edition (not Pioneer), 2100 or 3200, you get a 5-year warranty on each NAS and supported Rsync over SSH. Of course the Vault is better if you'd prefer not to have to manage two boxes and can afford to pay for storing data in the Vault.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Hi wpns,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble getting started and that the NETGEAR support team wasn't able to get you pointed in the right direction more quickly. The good news is that we are here to help and will be happy to get you up and running...

First, let me clarify - you can get directly to dedicated Vault support at the email address support@vault.readynas.com.. I'm not sure why they gave the incorrect information (that is not a live address), but we will work with NETGEAR support to make sure that gets corrected.

This is the best way to get a fast response and will route you directly to a support and engineering team with deep knowledge of the Vault service. Plus, if they can't resolve the issue in a timely manner over email, they will work to schedule a live chat or phone support call with you.

In the interest of time, I'll ask an engineer to PM you directly via the forum so we can get to the bottom of things ASAP.

Thanks,

ReadyNAS Vault Support Team

fish, perhaps you could add a sticky to the ReadyNas Vault forum with the email address or a link to a web page stating information about ReadyNas Vault support?

Great idea. I will talk to the powers that be (not sure I can create a sticky on my own) and make it so...

Sorry, I'm being dense tonight. 2.0.9 is the latest, or 1.1.2 is the latest? How can I confirm which one I have installed? Neither of them show up in <Services> <Installed AddOns>, but this isn't a network protocol, is it?

I did the addon installation properly, and it asked me to reboot, so it must have done something...
I did walk thru the setup instructions...

Thanks for the feedback!

Add-ons that are not to install stuff found elsewhere in Frontview are located under Services > Installed Add-Ons, with the exception of stuff like EnableRootSSH which don't have a web interface. Since Vault is under Backup, updating using the add-on should update that.

Well, that was clear as mud. _SHOULD_ I see the Vault 2.0.9 {release, update} in Services>Installed Addons or not?

No, you should see it under Backup > ReadyNas Vault (or whatever the tab's called). Installed Addons only shows add-ons that are not updating something in Frontview found elsewhere and need to have a web interface (even if only for disabling and removing the add-on).

Pretend I'm really dense. I should see _WHAT_ on the Backup>ReadyNAS Vault page?

On the ReadyNAS that has had the 2.0.9 update installed I see the exact same page that I do on the one that hasn't had any updates.

Is there some place where I can see what version of the Vault software I'm running?

You will see the same page at Backup -> ReadyNAS Vault page.
The page has not changed. We are working on displaying the version number on that page.

In the meantime, you should see the following entry in the logs (Status -> Logs)
Successfully updated ReadyNAS Vault to version 2.0.9.

Vault support has conveyed that they have sent you a direct Tech Support chat link so that you can directly talk to a Support Engineer.
Can you please access that when you get a chance?
Let me know if you have not received that email.

jdharap,

Thanks, the log shows I'm running 2.0.9!

Yes, I've got a chat link, which I'm going to follow up on as soon as I can dedicate a moment to it...

Thanks!

Sorry for the slow response - I've put a sticky up here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=38973 with the contact information. Hopefully this will help to reduce the confusion for other users.
