ReadyDLNA, PS3 & Inconsistent 'Unsupported Data' Messages

Postby ryan_young » Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:40 pm

I can see from the forums that people regularly have issues with unsupported file types when trying to stream to their PS3s with ReadyDLNA on the ReadyNAS, however, the problem I'm experiencing is a bit different.

I have found that all my video files will play on the PS3, however, some of them will only work after a complete rescan. For example, when I add a new video file to one of the appropriate folders, I can then see it through the media server menus in the PS3. However, occasionally, a newly added file (e.g. an xvid) will show up but when I try to play it I get the message "this data type is not supported".

If I carry out a full rescan of the folders through frontview I find that the file will play perfectly well the next time I try it!

If I try to play the file in something like xbmc through upnp it works fine so presumably it is something PS3 specific, although the fact that a rescan helps suggests there is some sort of parameter that the PS3 is interested in that isn't being reported correctly when first scanned that other DLNA players are less pernickety about....?

I recently bought twonky media server thinking this might not have the issue (it didn't appear to whilst I trialled it) but I've started to occasionally get it with that too now.

I'm wondering:
1) if anyone else experiences this problem
2) Is there any way to prevent this happening in the first place
3) if there is a way to force one particular file to be rescanned in the library (as it takes ages to fully rescan)

Cheers

I've just tried accessing a problem file via the twonky web browser interface and it worked fine which confirms PS3 has no problem with the video format etc.

It's a bit annoying but at least there is a relatively easy way around it.

I'm rebuilding the database overnight again so I expect it will all work again as normal through the media menus.

I think I have come across the same problem occasionally. I have a large library of mostly HD files, a lot of them very large. What I found out is, that when I copy files, it sometimes takes quite a lot of time to finish, let's say up 15 minutes for a full movie. Since I also process a lot of movies to make them PS3 compatible (for example read the input from a local Mac Disk and write the final stream to the NAS with MPEGStreamClip or tsMuxer), it can take even more time for the file to be completed on the NAS. I suspect that the db update process of the ReadyDLNA starts to scan the file before it is actually complete on the NAS and the writes wrong information into the db. This can be seen on the Playstation when the length of the movie does not match what the local tools on the MAC report. Of course, if you do are full rescan, the same file gets properly processed, because at that time the file usually is complete.

Can some of the developers please verify this assumption and publish a fix for it in case this is indeed the problem?

Sure!
I can not see whole folders on my TV. I have a lot of images, too. Some of them are TIF's and are not processed.

Does anyone make the same experience.
And is the a chance to get an answer from Netgear?
