ReadyNAS Photos without registering on external site?

I would like to use a photo sharing solution that resides on the ReadyNAS alone and does not require any third party website registrations.

I carefully read the description of the Photo add-on but it is still unclear to me if and how the service interacts with readynasphotos.com. Seems that you access the photos on the NAS using a link like USERNAME.readynasphotos.com. Can you access the photos without going through a third party site (potential privacy issues like tracking come to mind)? Also the tutorial for activating the service does not mention opening of ports on the router, I wonder how the photos are accessed remotely (off-site).

I am open to other type of photo access as well - seems the device can have PHP/mysql software installed but as I am not very familiar with *nix don't know if software like Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/) would work satisfactory?

I think Netgear should make something like Synology did. Their photoscript is loaded directly from the NAS and you just have to drag and drop your photos and videos into the /photo/ folder on the NAS. The script creates thumbnails automatically and via http://yourexternalip/photo/ you open your albums straight from your NAS. No need to install extra software !

lol, old post and no real answer... I'm gonna post under it anyway.
I'm disappointed with my purchase (Duo). One among many reasons is I bought the most expensive one in the store and brought it home only to discover it's a model 3 yrs old and all the cool software the netgear site is hyping won't work on it. ah well, my bad for making an impulse buy without researching the product.
but since i have it, guess i'll mess around with it for a few days before i chuck it out the window (for several other reasons as well).

the point i want to grind in is along the same line as the original post- all the packaging hype about using the built-in photo sharing software, the fact the netgear site makes a big deal about using this instead of 3-rd party sites so you never lose anything, and yet in the end i discover the only way it works is by using THEIR (3rd party) site. lol. seriously?

The box should also make it very clear you MUST use their folder structure. That's really lame.

Why can't I access this locally with local user accounts (as annoying as THOSE are to setup- users can't be simply assigned membership in multiple groups)? In the name of security and sanity, why must I allow access to my unit from outside just to share pictures locally in a UI friendly manner? What happens when the modem is down? Why does anyone think it's ok to force yet another site signup for EVERYONE that wants to access this? What happens when that service disappears? it will disappear, they always do.

I should have spent the money and repaired my real server. Just thought this would be a quick out of the box solution. bah. that's what i get for being lazy.

ReadyNAS Photos II is available under Add-Ons > Available in Frontview on the ReadyNAS NVX/Ultra/Ultra Plus/Pro (x86) and is pre-installed on the new Duo/NV+ v2 (ARM). Unfortunately it is not available on the v1 (Sparc). To tell if you have a v1 or a v2 see How to tell whether I have a Duo v1 or Duo v2 or NV+ v1 or NV+ v2

ReadyNAS Photos II is dependent on the NetGear server photos.readynas.com but the files are stored locally on the NAS.
