NVX - DOA - Drive trays also off track.

Postby claykin » Mon Jul 19, 2010 10:29 pm

Ordered an NVX for a family member looking to upgrade their aging NV+. Box in perfect condition. Newegg packed the NVX carton inside a second box and both look good. Open the NVX box and still all looks good. Open the front door and problems begin to unfold. All 4 drive trays are tilted to the left at the top. I'm able to remove the 2 x spare trays, but the 2 x populated trays were really hard to wiggle out. I finally got them out and noticed the connector on the backplane is now a little out of whack. Visual inspection with a flashlight and magnifying glass indicate that the plastic SATA connector is not cracked and the backplane PCB looks good, but I can't tell if solder connections may be broken on the solder side of the backplane. 2 x WD RE3 disks look OK.

I reinsert the 2 populated trays and they install just fine and stay straight and on track this time. I power on and the NVX says "booting" and sits there with the 2 LED lit. I tried a few more times, but no luck. Here's what else I did...

1) Boot diagnostic menu and selected test disks. Nope, stays on "booting" forever.
2) Boot diagnostic menu and selected OS Reinstall. Nope, stays on "booting" forever.
3) Boot diagnostic menu and selected factory default. Nope, stays on "booting" forever
4) Removed disk 1 and installed disk 2 in disk 1 slot. Powered up. Same thing. Performed above steps. Same thing.
5) Installed ES.2 disk in slot 1. Same issue as above. Also tried slot 2 -4. Same issue.
6) Reseated RAM DIMM. Same thing as above.
7) Tried USB flash recovery, but won't read thumb drive. LED 1 and 3 stay lit. Tried 5 thumb drives, Corsair, Sandisk, Patriot. All formatted Fat32. Followed DBott67 recovery instructions. No go, but thanks Dave for the guide!

OK, she's dead. Calling Newegg tomorrow for an exchange. The odd thing is that this is the second time I heard of (and in this case witnessed) an NVX with drive trays jammed in crooked. Hmmmm. Is Chirpa jumping up and down on the cartons as he leaves work each day?

Yes. Pretty thorough testing there.

Sometimes things may go a little wrong somewhere. It happens with a lot of electronics. There is a DOA (Dead On Arrival) rate. I think chirpa restrains himself and does not use the force to teleport himself to the factory where ReadyNAS are produced.

Was the cardboard box damaged? Sounds odd. Maybe FedEx/UPS/etc dropped it?

Anyways, hopefully the exchange goes without issues.

Cardboard perfect. Double boxed and both boxes were in great shape. Interior foam in place. All looked OK. Maybe it got manhandled on final assembly??

Wow, in looking over the decals, I see the NVX is Made in China (surprise, surprise, surprise), also Made in Taiwan (according to bottom decal) and Assembled in USA. I presume the good ole USA is where the disks are installed? I think my BMW has fewer assembly and manufacturing plants involved.

I'll tell Newegg tomorrow. Maybe they'll trade it for a Pro. :slap:

Maybe someone is telling me this should be an Ultra 4 and not an NVX?!? Oh yeah, they want to use RSYNC over SSH when they move the NV+ offsite for backup purposes. Better stick with the NVX I suppose... Cough, cough!

Perhaps.

Yes. Though the NV+ doesn't support Rsync over SSH. Like the Ultra 4 it requires a community add-on (I haven't tested either to see how they work). Performance may be unbearably slow due to the NV+ having a slow CPU. I'd run the backup job on the NVX if at all possible, not the NV+.

I thought so. Good to hear someone's in agreement with my diag skills.

Me know lots about defective electronics. I'm like a magnet to them. I think it may have been caused by the Samsonite Gorilla.

You are right. I need to read up on RSYNC. I know there's a good doc on the Readynas site.

Yes, there's also an old Infrant guide: http://www.readynas.com/download/documentation/support/rsync_howto_nastonas.pdf too.

It would be nice if the Jedi released an update to this guide to incorporate Rsync over SSH and NetGearise it. Also perhaps include the new feature exclusion lists and advise people on how to tell which model suits their Rsync needs. Other than that the guide's pretty good.

The guide also doesn't mention that NFS can be much quicker (especially when running the backup job on Sparc ReadyNAS) for full backups over LAN. I use NFS then change the backup job properties to use Rsync.

Newegg comes through as usual. Replacement en route via 2nd day air. Return label provided for defective. Hopefully two times is a charm.

Replacement arrived. Much better this time.

Notice these newer NVX units illuminate the disk numbers better than older production.

Is the display still backlit LCD (difficult to read at an angle)?
