ReadyNAS NVX stuck at boot (Spinning down...)

Postby abeman » Sun Sep 05, 2010 9:36 am

Hi

I have ReadyNAS NVX, when I turned it on, it gets stuck at boot.
The display says:

Code: Select all
Booting...
Spinning down...

I have seen it with spinning up also.

I can still see it using Raidar, but I cannot access it using frontview. The page is not found when I try to browse to it.

The last thing I did yesterday was install the uTorrent addon from superpoussin (1.1), the update dialog never finished but
it looked to have installed ok.
I tried a restart and I saw "updating addon" ot one point but it got stuck on that also.

any suggestions besides a reset?

thx

Try re-installing the firmware (aka OS re-install). This will not affect your data, but it will reset the network settings and your admin password to default values:

Thx for the tip but no joy :(

it did say updating firmware but when it restarted, same thing happened.
Installing addon
and then spinning down...
anything else I can try so I do not loose my data?

thx

I did contact them, they told me it is going to cost me 75 USD to have a remote look.
I do not want to spend that money. Can I have a look myself perhaps with telnet?

I have also tried already a fw update with a USB stick, that also did not telp.
Same thing all over, installing addon and spinning down.

You can't look yourself using telnet (that's for support only in tech support mode). If you have SSH access enabled and the NAS gets far enough into the boot process you may be able to use that.

Also note that USB Boot Recovery should only be done if requested by support.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Well I did the boot recovery already, with the latest raidiator.
no problems there, that worked as documented, but that did not
help anything.
From what I can tell, the problem does not lie with the firmware, but for some reason
it keeps trying to install some addon when it boots up and that is breading the boot process
for some reason.
I did notice that when the display stated spinning down and I pressed the power button, it
did change to spinning up, but that is about it, gets stuck at spinning up.
Can I boot somehow that it skips the install addon section?

I don't think so.

You could try skipping the volume check and/or running the "Test Disks" boot option (both are done via the NVX/Ultra/Pro boot menu) but I doubt either would help in this case, but they may be worth a try.

I guess the add-on developer super-poussin may know what the problem is (or have a good guess) but like the rest of us users he doesn't have access to telnet mode (that's for Jedi and support use only).

I did try those options (skip volume check and check disks) also but not luck.
I send super-poussin a twitter msg, hope he comes and has a look.

Is it unreasonable to assume that you have a current and complete backup somewhere?

Not quite, I have some but not all of it.
@PapaBear your footer is very useful, a bit late though.

How important/critical is the data that is not backed up? It's one thing if it is music ripped from CD's that you have but would have to spend time re-ripping and another if it family photos that exist nowhere else or important financial information with no hard copy existing.

BTW - how many drives?

Well, the music is ok, the pictures not so much... also some videos that I would not like to lose to be honest.
The thing is, as far as I can tell, the data is still there, it is just the operating system that is somehow not working
at this time.
there are 3 drives of 1Gb in Xraid.
Is there any way I could take out the drives, fix the OS/FW put the drives back and get it going again...
or something along those lines...

Unfortunately, the OS in on the drives. Recently I upgraded my NV+ to 1TB drives to serve as a backup for my NVX. I pulled the 4 drives in it (3 500GB and 1 750GB). In response to a question, I pulled my 3 1TB drives and replace the 750GB in the box as a solo drive. On boot, I got a bad firmware error (I had upgraded the FW [aka OS] after the update) so I had to do a factory default reset to wipe the data on the drive and re-initialize it.

That is what we need to try to avoid. It is the weekend, and maybe some of our experienced members who are familiar with Linux will be along tomorrow or Monday to assist in getting the data off. You could also make an online submission (use link in mdgb's signature above). Once you get a ticket number edit your heading and add the ticket number in case one of the Jedi come by.

As a last resort, a factory default reset can be done, but if you are willing to wait and try to save the pictures and videos, it would probably be worth it. We want by all means to keep you out of our non-exclusive club - the Club of Those Who Have Lost Data - I joined decades ago, and have become almost paranoid about it with backups of my backups of my backups. All of my data is on my NVX and just this afternoon I messed up a file. I just copied it back off my NV+ to my NVX and was back in business. I have kind of promised the NV+ to someone, and am now trying to decide which new box I am going to add to my stable.

A second NVX looks like the leader although the new Ultra6 and Pro are tempting me. I have to make the decision quickly before the rebates expire. My NV+ has served me well, but the NVX is a real sweet box.
