Memeo licenses missing from package

Simplifying backup strategy with ReadyNAS

Memeo licenses missing from package

Postby cstern » Tue Sep 22, 2009 7:07 am

I just bought a Readynas NVX and on the www.readynas.com it is stated that the nas should be delivered including three free licenses for Memeo Backup Premium (a 200$ value!). That is great - except I can not find it anywhere in the box. The backup software is on the CD and it installs nicely. But it appears to be a 30 day demo, not the promised full product.

I checked the CD sleeve and other accompanying papers, but a serial number is nowhere to be found.

The nas is delivered with RAIDiator 4.2.5, so I guess the production date is quite recent (I can give the serial number if needed).

Please clarify how to get the three licenses.

Thanks in advance,

The NVX is a new product that shipped with Memeo from when it was released. As I don't have a ReadyNas with Memeo, I don't know how to find the license key. You could wait for another response or contact support.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

I contacted Tech Support and got this answer which could be useful for others:

Code: Select all
Hi Claus,

First make sure that no software firewall prevents the backup software from finding the ReadyNas on the network.

A recommendation would also be to reboot the ReadyNAS and re-launch the software and see if it register correctly.

When Memeo is installed and launched it will look for the ReadyNAS on the network and when it locates it, Memeo will automatically register itself.
If it does not locate the ReadyNAS it will load the 31 day trial version and will ask for a registration code which is something Netgear doesn´t provide.
If it does not locate the ReadyNAS it will look for it everytime the software is re-launched or everytime the PC is rebooted.

Kind regards
Netgear Support

I have the same problem with Memeo not being licensed. I tried to call support but they are not very helpful. First they didnt know what Memeo was. Then they say it is not included, but both NetGear and Memeos website say it is included.

I like the new product but I am about to return it because of false advertising and shoddy support.

Memeo website listing 9/10/2010
http://www.memeo.com/ng/prembackup.php

Netgear’s Website
http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=3962
This is listed as the Definitive Guide to the ReadyNAS Ultra
(half way down the page under the heading "Continuous Data Protections (CDP) Backup" on the very first line it says "The ReadyNAS comes with a 3-user licnese of Memeo Backup Premium."

But support says NO THEY DONT CARE it is a MARKETING ISSUE. They don't even know what Memeo is!

I so far like the $600 product but I will return it if I cant get what is suppose to be included!

Do you have a software firewall running on your PC? If so, you could try temporarily disabling the software firewall. Have a read of the code quote in the previous post.

Edit: Sometimes the entry levels of NetGear's tech support don't have the level of knowledge of the ReadyNAS product to make correct statements about it. It looks like you've had one of those experiences with support. If they don't know the answer to your question they should refer it to someone who does, not make false assertions about their product.

No I turned my firewall off.

Regardless the Memeo software does find my ReadyNAS and backups up to it. Unfortunately it just doesnt autolicense the product.

How do you get support from NetGear from 2nd or 3rd level support? or just a secretary who speaks native english and will help?

I had the same issue. Could not find out what was wrong, been on phone with many tech support people. Took traces and found that the protocol that is used (SSDP) was not being sent from the laptop in which I had Memeo installed on. Finally problem was resolved when I connected to the network on the wire (ethernet) instead of wireless. After rebooting, Memeo then sent the proper packets to ReadyNAS and the software then was activated. Before doing this, I signed up for an account at Memeo and once the activation took place, I received an email from Memeo congratulating me. Also in the email was the product key. But there was no need to use the key because ReadyNAS already activated the software.
