Lost computer restore

Postby achun » Fri Aug 06, 2010 12:57 pm

If I've been using Time Machine to back up a Macbook to a ReadyNAS, and that Macbook is lost or stolen, and I have a hardware-identical replacement computer ready to go, how can I restore the lost computer's backup to the new hardware?

We haven't tried it ourselves. But we will try and check into it over the next few days.

Looking around the web, it does seem possible: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/use_apple_ ... cbook.html

Assuming you've used the built-in TM feature of your ReadyNAS, boot the new mac from the OSX install disc as if you were going to reinstall the OS - but during that process one of the options available to you should be to restore from a TM backup. Select that and follow the instructions - selecting your NAS as the source of the backup

NAS: Ultra-4, NV+ & Duo v2 :: ST31500341AS & HDS723020BLA642 Drives
Network: Netgear GS108Tv2 / DM111P :: Airport Extreme / Express & Time Capsule
Clients: OS X 10.6 - 10.8 :: Ubuntu 11.x :: Win 7 + SP#1
UPS: APC ES-550

Hi
I have been using the "old" method of TM backing upto my ReadyNAS Duo for some time now.
However after a second hard drive failure, I am now trying to boot from from the osx install discs and take the restore from TM option.
This time round I put in the nas user and pass but then get the "Volume "ReadyNAS" cannot be mounted.

Please tell me how to sort this - I've already lost 2 weeks work what with the iMac going for repair.

Many thanks.

You need to provide more detail:

- What exactly do you mean by "old" method? Describe how your TM backups are setup
- Please elaborate on "This time round I put in the nas user and pass but then get the "Volume "ReadyNAS" cannot be mounted"

"Old" method is probably this: http://www.readynas.com/?p=253

Is this correct?

If you can't login to the relevant share using the username and password you have set you may need to try installing Mac OS X from the Install Disks then using the Migration Assistant.

If the TM backup is stored on a regular share, then the backup sparsebundle needs to be mounted before selecting the option to restore from TM.

Lots of posts on the web of how to do this eg http://nedos.net/2008/03/29/restore-fro ... opard-dvd/

Yes, exactly that!

However, the imac just came back from the authorised repair centre with OSX 10.5.6 reinstalled on it, but basically fresh.
After tinkering around (a lot!) with the help of this forum I have managed to mount and access the sparsebundle in the mac os and even connect it to TM from a couple of weeks ago (which is where I'd like to restore to).
But I'd like to restore the whole system.

Unfortunately Migration Assistant won't do it either, so I was trying to use th restore option from the installer discs but as I said before, after putting in the username andpassword it refused to mount????

Thanks again for all help/advice.

Could you follow the instructions in step 3 of the FAQ at the bottom of http://www.readynas.com/TimeMachine, then attempt a restore following the instructions: http://www.readynas.com/?p=1730?

You'll probably want to restore onto the iMac, I guess.

However for those wondering, I know of an example of a restore working onto a different machine. A MacBook running Leopard was the machine that was backed up and a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard was restored onto.

Edit: alternatively follow the guide sphardy referenced.

So, re the step 3 are you suggesting to install the new method through frontview, then stop after it starts and copy the old sparsebundle over it?

Hmm....
Have tried this several times now but when I run the TM backup this way the status bar for backing up just keeps on going with "preparing" underneath.
Plus at the top it tells me Available 0KB of 342.0GB.
I know there's plenty of space on my Duo but I can't get this to work!!????!!!
Please remember the OSX install is less than a day old, so I reckon it has to be something in the NAS itself - any ideas?

thanks.
