T60 Harddrive smart errors on readynas duo

Postby techman05 » Thu Nov 11, 2010 5:24 pm

I've been getting smart errors since I updated to 4.1.7 . I'm not sure what to think with this issue since the health looks green. All I know is that I'm thinking I need to get a second drive before it does fail, but I figure I'll ask here before I go out and spend more on a drive even though I made sure to put it on my holiday list just in case.

What brand and model drives are you using?

Are they on the HCL?

What SMART errors are you getting?

I think the disk is a seagate baracuda 1.5TB HD. I'll have to double check though.

Please get the exact model number when you can.

The 1.5TB Seagate is a known problematic drive. It could just be coincidence with firmware update, that they are showing errors now. I have four myself, all with high numbers of errors on them.

You can check this under Status > Health. Checking the firmware version of the disk (can do this by clicking the SMART+ button on the Health page) could also be a good idea for good measure. I have 14 SeaGate 1.5TB drives with CC1H firmware. There are several other firmware versions e.g. SD1A as well.

Kinda funky amazon selling it as a package deal available for this nas. I wish I saw that before. Any idea which drive I should ask for if I'm replacing it. I haven't had my pc HD's yell at me like this so I'm not sure. I'm of course going to go for 2TB if I get a second drive to in the end replace it.

*as for seeing mdgm post about firmware, can it be updated without loosing data ? I'm waiting for my nas to wake up after shutting it down to check the HD

Amazon shouldn't have been selling any older firmware drives for well over 6 months now. So I doubt it is that. My drives have the latest firmware and still have errors, it is a hardware issue on the drivers that firmware cannot completely resolve, just poorer quality.

Yes, I have errors too. I haven't had the NAS fail one of my 14 of these drives yet (I might just have had a pretty fortunate run with these drives so far). Just to confirm it is the ST31500341AS from the HCL that you have installed?

If you're going to go for a 2TB drive perhaps consider one of the Hitachi drives on the list.

You will continue to see this Reallocated Sector count grow. I'd consider RMAing the drives with Seagate soon.

Is there any nice tool to backup all my data off this drive. I also assume since the first time I installed this drive I needed to do a full install that I should backup the config as well .

How full is the drive right now?

You can do a config backup of your FrontView settings via System>Config Backup.

Depending on amount of data, and destination, we can give you steps for that process. Would you be backing up to another PC, or to a USB enclosure?

Probably to a usb enclosure. Ive got a usb drive that has enough space for my 38 GB's I figure back it up , find rma and start holiday shopping early. I didn't see a 2TB or larger for any except for segate and I think most local stores stray the seagate path.

* derr its higher up on the HCL page.
