The update worked fine for me. The firmware update does not touch your data. I advise backing up data regularly regardless (http://www.readynas.com/?p=3153) and it doesn't hurt to backup your data before doing a firmware update.

4.1.7 includes over a year worth of new features and bug fixes and is a very important update.

I have updated my nv and nv+ and had no real issue with data loss but there have been people reporting problem with ReadyDLNA, Photonas, Remote and Transmissions to name a few. I personally would not risk my data and back up before hand.

Another method that I use is I use a scratch drive. I shut down my nas remove my 4 drives from the nas keeping track of the order and then install a blank scratch drive in bay 1 and do a firmware update and test. Then I shut down the nas install the 4 original drives back into in the nas in the proper order and turn on the nas test. Then do a os re-insatll.

But the above method will not help you if you have 4k drives you need to do a factory default which will wipe out all you data if you want to properly align your 4k drives.

OK updated to 4.1.7 without issues. What about addons ?! Are they compatible ? I need root access eg.
And one issue i had on my old nas was the "slow connect on mapped drives" issue. I solved this by modifing some config file parameters trough root.

So it seems that my addons are still there :-) one more question, does anybody know which smb.conf files has been used while connecting from windows7 ?!

I found the following:

Code: Select all
NAS:~# locate smb.conf
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.CIFSFS
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.OS2
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.Samba
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.UNKNOWN
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.Vista
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.WfWg
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.Win2K
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.Win2K3
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.Win95
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.WinNT
/etc/frontview/samba/smb.conf.WinXP
/usr/share/samba/smb.conf

Your addons may still be there but you still may need to be re-installed. As for modifications using root, some of these may be overwritten. The smb.conf used with Windows depends on the version of Windows used.

So when there is no appropriate smb.conf (when using win7), which one is used or do i have to generate a new one and which settings for this ?!

Windows 7 is similar to Vista in many ways, so it probably uses the same one as that, I guess. Windows 7 should work fine with the ReadyNAS on 4.1.7 (and mostly on 4.1.6).

OK but who is selecting which SMB.conf is used ? The OS on the NAS ? Which "information" is used to determine which conf to use ?

I don't know. It would be determined however the samba protocol is written to handle this. I expect there would be communication between the NAS service and the client whereby it is identified which file is needed for the particular client.

Firmware RAIDiator 4.1.7

Postby Pearl » Tue Nov 23, 2010 8:17 am

On our ReadyNAS 2100 (Firmware RAIDiator 4.1.7) we don't have the ReadyDLNA Add-On showing under Streaming Sevices. We tried reinstalling the add-on (version x86) and following a reboot the log shows it was successfully installed, however it still does not show up.

Any Ideas?

Confused do you have a x86 system then why do you have 4.1.7 installed shouldn't you have 4.2.15 as per the documenatation "RAIDiator x86 (for ReadyNAS Ultra, Pro, NVX, 2100, 3100, 3200, 4200)"

I think you have the wrong firmware installed how it is working I have no idea 4.1.7 is for the sparc processor.

Using the Web GUI, we updated the firmware to RAIDiator 4.2.15 (x86), we still have the same problem.
