ReadyNAS Pro memory specs??

ReadyNAS Pro memory specs??

Postby tlyczko » Wed Jan 12, 2011 11:26 am

I have 4 GB RAM in our ReadyNAS Pro that I bought in late 2008, it has worked fine since then.

FrontView shows 4-5-5-18 DDR2 -- how does this translate into specifying what memory to buy??

I have inquired to Netgear technical support and received no reply so far.

Can anyone please post about what memory they have found to work in a ReadyNAS Pro??

I want to put 4 GB into a to-be-ordered ReadyNAS Pro.

Thank you, Tom

Hi Tom,

This is what I used: viewtopic.php?f=110&t=32589

I'm sure that section of the forums has more information on what you're looking for.

Basically you need DDR2-667 240pin RAM.

Where can I learn what the 4-5-5-18 spec means so I can translate it into what I should buy??

4-5-5-15 is not the same...

BTW is Raidiator 4.2.5 a beta version?? I see only 4.2.15 is officially available...

Thank you, Tom

Memory upgrades aren't supported. So if a memory upgrade causes problems you'll be on your own (or whatever help you can get from the forum).

4.2.5 is very old firmware. 4.2.15 is 10 firmware revisions newer and the latest firmware. 4.2.16 is currently in public beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=48457

What version of RAIDiator x86 are you running on your ReadyNAS?

I can always put back the original memory.
Presently using 4.2.15 version, I know about 4.2.16, looking forward to it.
4.2.5 is greater than 4.2.15, that's why I wondered.
When I bought our first ReadyNAS Pro 2 years ago I bought memory for it which has those specs.
Thank you, Tom

That will be small comfort if you have data corruption.

????
4.2.5 would be greater than a number 4.2.1.5, but 4.2.15 > 4.2.14 > 4.2.13 > 4.2.11 > 4.2.10 > 4.2.9 > 4.2.8 > ... > 4.2.5 > ... > 4.2.1

Okay, math genius. :) :)
Most of us don't think in terms of 2 sets of decimal places
:) But please go to instacalc.com and feed in 4.2.5 - 4.2.15 and please tell me if you get a positive or negative answer.

Read more about memory timings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_timings

You really won't see much difference as a home/SOHO user.

Thank you for the timings information...I will read it.
Why are you assuming I'm a home/SOHO user because I asked about RAM?? :) :)

Enterprise users presumably wouldn't want to void the warranty by upgrading the RAM.

Thank you for sending this...good reading, waiting for hardware to arrive etc.
Would you please point to where I can do a memory test on the ReadyNAS Pro??
I didn't find anything in the FAQ.
Thank you, Tom

memory test is on the boot menu, hold the reset pin while powering up the nas, use power button (or usb button, I forget) to cycle thru menu options (make sure not to choose FACTORY DEFAULT unless you want to completely wipe everything), then press the reset pin again to activate the chosen menu item

Firmware version is x.y.z, where x=4, y=2, and z=5 or z=15. Typically x=major revision, y=minor revision, and z=patch level (or micro revision).

Yes, I remember now that firmware math/numbering are different than normal counting. :) :)
