Yea I have to agree with you on that. I will make sure that not only are the ES drives qualified on the Sparc based platforms but the other current Enterprise class drives. We normally use enterprise class drives in our Sparc based systems in the lab but no formal drive qual was done on them.

That being said however they should work OK but to make sure let us install some in an NV+ to make sure. Also I don't think these drives are using the 4K sectors yet, WD is the only drive manufacture really is pushing 4K sector drives throughout their entire line. The other manufactures are not transitioning as quickly. These are expensive drives so unless you absolutely need them right away give us a week or so to check them out.

Thanks, Han Solo!!! I would love to see these tested on whatever timetable works, and I know I'm not the only one who is interested from this thread. My plan was to start with three drives and add a fourth when needed. I have my 4 750s (cuda ES) that are nearly full and I should be able to get three for not too much of a premium over the more consumer oriented drives [not meant for high density storage] and buy a 4th when these aren't hot in a year or more. These drives effectively replace the drives I have now (well the ES.2, which replaces the ES) and those were popular in NV+s when I purchased it.

Thanks again!

Thanks so much! It's gotten nearly impossible to find ES.2 drives any more, and I didn't want to risk my data to an unqualified drive. (That was, after all, the whole point of using enterprise grade drives.)

Of course, if the 2TB Constellations also qualify, I might just have to take the plunge...

As schalliol said, whatever timetable works. It's not so urgent that I need to know in the next "week or so." (Besides, you guys have been hard at work -- I hope you take some time off for Thanksgiving!)

I am a new member on this forum because I am considering buying a ReadyNAS Duo to act as a media and file store and primary back-up.

Not being deeply technical, the many 100 pages on reliability issues leave me baffled :?, and no up-to-date summary seems to exist. Please can somebody tell me
1- which are the largest known-to-be-reliable disks on the HCL? I would love 2TB disks but they all seem to fail in droves.
2- whether I will get reliable disks buying the Duo with the pre-installed disks on the 2-for-1 offer, or should I buy the empty box and source the disks myself?

Thank you in advance!

I am planning to purchase a ReadyNAS DUO and Samsung 1TB drives. The Spinpoint F1 drives are listed on the HCL but the newest version of what seems to be the same hard drive, the Samsung Spinpoint F3 drives are not. Does anyone know if the F3 drives are compatible?

Thanks.

I'd really like to get the Samsung 2TB drives, because the Hitachi's I want are really spendy. It would be great to know what is in the hopper, at least...

For those considering 2TB HDs, I've been using 2 WD Green Caviar units (WD20EARS) for almost 3 months now in a Duo with no hiccups :) Both disks showing 1859GB allocated.

Happy New Year, Han!

Any word on the Constellation ES drives in an NV+? (The old Barracuda ES and ES.2 were certified, but they're discontinued.) Thanks!

Bump... Also interested in any word on the Constellation ES drives in an NV+.

Have yet another Barracuda ES.2 drive failing on me with SMART errors, and given the Constellation drives are cheaper here in Japan than the (now discontinued) ES.2 drives it would make sense to move to the more modern drive if it will work.

I know I'm a bother here and am sorry. I'm running out of space and am ready to buy drives as well. Since it sounded like you guys were going to test this on the NV+/platform, if you could find some time to do so soon, that would be a super big help. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Well, since it's been almost 9 months since I asked about testing these drives :( , I decided to order a couple of these 2TB drives. I do understand the Jedi have other things to do, though I was under the impression this would be reviewed. I will backup (again), factory default and install. I don't know exactly when I'll get to this, but I'll let you know what I find.

Edit: Bought a Ultra 4 Plus after NV+ failure, so I won't be testing here after all. Sorry :(

Just successfully added a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk USB 3.0 2TB unit to my X6 (Rev. A) unit this week. No major problems encountered so far. I've added a more detailed post in the community hardware compatibility section.

:(

At this point I'm hesitant to buy another ReadyNAS, since they don't seem to be testing or certifying any current enterprise-grade drives on a product less than 4 years old. (And "NETGEAR Technical Support can and will deny support" if you use uncertified drives, according to their HCL page.) Reliability is actually important to me (hence, you know, RAID?).

I know they've released software updates, and I understand that the hardware is inherently limited and EOL, but this silence is not going to encourage me to buy a newer model.

Conversely, if I had some indication that their support was truly ongoing, I'd be much more interested in picking up a newer model, probably in addition to my existing NAS.
