Cannot Setup RSync

Postby jayeyy » Sun May 29, 2011 9:25 am

Okay so yesterday i had a problem with my Duo (viewtopic.php?f=65&t=53596)

Because im going to factory defauly my DUO to reinitilise the discs, I want to backup my DUO to my ReadyNas Pro, I Copyied over the selected shares from the DUO to the Pro using windows explorer, I now want to setup rsync to verify everything is ok..and make sure its all copyied fine.

The problem is setting up the rsync server, On both my Pro and Duo, ive enabled rsync in the Standard File Protocols Tab, I then went to the Duo (which im backing up) and went to the shares listing, Enabled rsync on "backup" share.

I then went to my Readynas Pro, and added a new backup job, "Remote: Rsync server", I entered in the host "192.168.0.100" (also tried: 192.168.0.100::backup, 192.168.0.100:backup), When i try to "Test connection", it says "Error Connecting."

I have no idea why, The readynas devices are connected to my PC with 2 ethernet ports (yes, my computer as 2 x gigbit ethernet and there both connected to these), The adapters are setup in the same range 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. (no default gateway)

The duo is running firmware: 4.1.6
The pro is running firmware: 4.2.17

Thanks alot, hope someone as a idea!

Neither NAS is connected to a router? Only the one PC?

NAS: Ultra-4, NV+ & Duo v2 :: ST31500341AS & HDS723020BLA642 Drives
Network: Netgear GS108Tv2 / DM111P :: Airport Extreme / Express & Time Capsule
Clients: OS X 10.6 - 10.8 :: Ubuntu 11.x :: Win 7 + SP#1
UPS: APC ES-550

Yes, i thought this would probarly have something to do with it, As there is no default gateway..

Maybe would be best to qucikly get a router and connect that to the pc ethernet then both the NAS devices? Since my main router is in another room and main network is wireless.

Cannot Setup RSync

The lack of a router means there is no network path between the 2 NAS' so direct NAS to NAS communication is not possible causing the rsync failure

NAS: Ultra-4, NV+ & Duo v2 :: ST31500341AS & HDS723020BLA642 Drives
Network: Netgear GS108Tv2 / DM111P :: Airport Extreme / Express & Time Capsule

Yeah ill do that now.

Also whats the best way to setup a wired network with nas's? Using a switch or router?

What does most people here tend to do?

Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction!

Jayeyy - Do you have a router?

Even with a router, I have my IP addresses set manually. You already have done that to direct connect the two units to your PC. You may also be able to use just a switch without a router. SPHardy would know more about that than I would. In mine I have an older router with 10/100 ports so to get the benefit of a gigabit connection, I have a Netgear GS108 switch connected to the router, with my NAS units (3) and my wired desktop connected to the switch.

As for the settings - if you are going to pull the data from the Duo to the Pro, my NAS3 settings are more appropriate as I pull the data from NAS2 to NAS3. (I am obviously very creative with my naming :lol:)

On the source NAS (Duo) you need to give permissions to the other NAS to read/write to the share. Assume that you are pulling from a share named data, you need to first enable rsync by clicking on the rsync image for the share, then in the next box that opens, enable read/write and then in the box for share access restrictions, check the box for host allowed access, and list the IP address of the target unit. (In my case I have the last part of the IP sequential for my three NAS units, 201 for NAS1, 202, and 203 for the other two. It makes it easier to keep track.)

Since you are pulling you do not set up a backup job on the source unit. (my NAS2 has no backup jobs).

On the target unit, you need to set up the backup job. For example my backup Job001 (on NAS3) in the box "Select backup source" is set for Remote: Rsync server. In the host box is the IP address of my NAS2 (nothing else, just the IP address). Then in the path is the name of the share I am backing up. If you are limiting the backup to a folder, you then then add a / and the folder name. In my case, backup Job001 backs up my finance share so the word finance is in the path box with no folders listed, as I want to backup the entire share.

Then in the box "Select backup destination" list the share name by clicking on the down arrow and then select "Share: sharename". If you want to back up to a particular folder, I believe you would put the path within the share in the path by using forward slashes "/folder/subfolder" although I have never done that. The shares on my backup NAS mirror the shares on my source unit.
Remember - the NAS is not a backup plan.

Thanks so much for the info, Rsync ran last night and its finished everything is copyied fine, Im now about to factory reset the Duo.

Then i guess ill copy back all of the data that i backed up, Or at least the most important data and follow your guide lines for a secondary backup.

@PapaBear

Okay so i backed everything up, My Duo was running on 4.1.6, so before i did a default i thought i may aswell update the firmware on the Duo, Once the update completed i went to the frontview to make sure it updated ok before doing a factory default... And guess what i see... wait for it...... Disc Sync In Progress!!!! So by updating the firmware the Duo no longer thinks that WD 2tb drive (that i spoke about in the other thread) is dead.. Its resyncing the volume!

Hurray!! Looks like i wont have to factory reset after all.. Looks likes its going to be fine, this is going to save me restoring the deuo shares and what not.

Thanks papabear and everyone else who posted... Couldnt of done it without you!

-Jay

PS: Im still going to take your advice PapaBear, and use the Duo is a secondary for important data. Whats the best way to setup a backup from the Pro to the Duo? NFS to start with, then change to Rsync after?

Yes. Because of the verification process in rsync it is like watching paint dry to do a full backup with rsync. Setting it up as NFS creates the backup, and then rsync only has to verify the check figure for each file to make sure all the data is there. Then every time you run the rsync job, it only copies over the changed portions of the file, so the "incremental" is very fast. If you were going from X-86 to X-86 it would take less than 1/2 the time used by the Duo to X-86, (or X-86 to Duo) but we are still only talking minutes to update gigabytes of data. Yesterday I added about 40GB of video files to my NAS1, and checking the logs from last night, it took about 24 minutes. If this had been from my NVX to my NV+ I would anticipate it would take around 45-50 minutes. But, I don't add 40 GB of data very often.
Remember - the NAS is not a backup plan.
