ReadyNAS 4200 with 10GBe CX4 direct connect

Postby martinjbridge » Wed Jun 29, 2011 8:22 am

Hi,

I have a dell R510 server with ESXi hosting Windows Server 2008 R2, I've added the ReadyNAS 4200 as a datastore and installed appropriate 10GBe drivers in ESXi but I am not using an intermediate switch. I'd like to setup a direct cable connection between the Dell and Netgear device, my question is basically will this work and what is the best method of configuring IP settings so that only traffic between the Dell and Netgear operates at this speed. What tools can I use to test performance?

Thanks

My setup is as follows:

1 virtual switch: vSwitch0
--Virtual Machine Port Group
--VMKernal port --NFS Traffic: 192.168.0.1
--VMKernal Port -- Management Network: 10.44.50.1

I am connecting directly to the ReadyNAS from the ESXi host through a CX4 cable and have basic ping connectivity. However I'm finding that my transfer speed are incredibly slow, i have enabled jumbo frames on both ends but this seems to have made it slower.

Can any guide me on my network configuration, should i have more than 1 virtual switch? I'm not using VLAN's in my network and do no have a 10Gbe switch.
