NAS Frontview Very SLOW Case #: 16138599

Please post questions regarding performance of the ReadyNAS here. (How to optimize the ReadyNAS performance)

NAS Frontview Very SLOW Case #: 16138599

Postby Deon » Wed Jul 13, 2011 9:58 pm

ReadyNAS NV+ RND4000 (3.5 years old)
S/N: 000D-A201-6EA5

For the past 2 months Frontview has become very, very slow.
I have updated the RAIDar software and firmware.
I have tried IE and Firefox, both with the same result.
I rebooted the NAS and performed volume scan and quota check with no errors.
There are no network errors.

All the menu items in the Frontview is extremely slow. When I get to the Backup list however the Frontview freezes (hangs up).

Please help.

Could you try a firmware re-install?: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_re-install_the_firmware

What versions of Firefox and IE are you using?

If you download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs), extract the zip contents and look at volume.log, what is the "block size"?

What brand and model disks are you using?

Do you have any add-ons installed?

What services are you running?

I have recently upgraded my disks. This speed problem started long before the upgrade.
Previous drives: 4 Seagate 250GB
Current drives: 4 Seagate 2TB (ST2000DL003)
No add-ons and no services (as far as I know).

I'd suggest opening a tech support case (see Online Submission link in my sig). Please edit the thread title (i.e. title of the first post) to include your case number.

I did phone support when I had problems upgrading disks. They were not very helpful since my NAS is 3.5 years old. Any other suggestions?

Phone Support is free for the first 90 days since purchase. After that if you need additional phone support there are support contracts you can buy. Online Support and this forum is free. Take a look at http://www.readynas.com/support

In the log zip file you downloaded, do things look fine in diagnostics.log?

If you have the time, it would be a good idea to try the following:

1. Backup all data
2. Verify backup is good
3. Do a factory reset e.g. via System > Update > Factory Default or using the Boot Menu (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu)
4. Wait for resync to complete then restore data from backup

This will give you a clean setup on the latest firmware (since you've already updated to the latest firmware).

I did perform a factory reset to get my new drives up and running. At this point everything is good and new, new drives, latest firmware and RAIDar software.
All tests passed. This is the performance notes:
* Journaling is enabled on the NAS filesystem. This is the recommended setting when you do not have a UPS. For optimal performance, you can attach a UPS to the system and disable journaling in the System -> Performance tab.
* Jumbo frames are disabled on interface 1. If both your switch and clients support jumbo frames, you can enhance your write performance by enabling jumbo frames on this interface.

That looks fine. I have journaling enabled and Jumbo Frames disabled on all my ReadyNAS units.

I'd suggest giving Online tech support a try. There are NetGear reps who frequent the forum who can give tech support a nudge if need be.

Just in case someone else has it, I had this problem and it turned out to be one of the DNS servers that my readyNAS was point to. Changed them around in FrontView and removed an obsolete one and Frontview is running heaps faster. Hope it helps.
