A Note Regarding Time Machine Support and Mac OS X Lion

Postby mdgm » Thu Jul 21, 2011 4:53 pm

Do note that Time Machine is only supported on Mac OS X Lion if you have Lion compatible firmware (4.1.8+ for Sparc and 4.2.18+ for x86) and if you setup follows this guide: Easy Time Machine Setup with the ReadyNAS

Backing up to ordinary shares (as described here: Making Time Machine work with the ReadyNAS) is not supported.

If you are comfortable with editing the netatalk config on your ReadyNAS e.g. using SSH (or a config backup) you can use other shares.

The home share locations for users are specified in the /etc/passwd file. The home share for the "ReadyNAS" (TM user on the ReadyNAS) is /var/lib/timemachine

If you look at this location using SSH you'll see a file called ".AppleVolumes" which specifies the location to be used for TM backups:
Code: Select all
MDGM-NAS:~# cat /var/lib/timemachine/.AppleVolumes
/c/.timemachine ReadyNAS cnidscheme:dbd allow:ReadyNAS options:tm

If you look in the Netatalk config you'll see e.g.
Code: Select all
MDGM-NAS:~# cat /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default
~
"/backup" "backup" cnidscheme:dbd
"/media" "media" cnidscheme:dbd

To be able to backup to an ordinary share you need to add "options:tm" (no quotes) to the line for that share.
e.g. to allow TM backups to the backup share you'll need:
Code: Select all
"/backup" "backup" cnidscheme:dbd options:tm

Do note that editing settings for the share manually if done improperly would cause problems accessing your AFP shares and may even break at least some parts of Frontview. Use at own risk.

Edit: For the change to take effect don't forget to restart Netatalk either via Frontview, a command via SSH (simplest if you're using SSH rather than a config backup restore to do the config change. The SSH command is mentioned in a post below) or a reboot.

Edited: Tried to clarify some of the above. Please also see Skywalker's post below. Please update to 4.1.8+ (Sparc) or 4.2.19+ (x86) before attempting this fix.

Thanks for this!
A long time ago I had to set up separate AFP mounts for TimeMachine purposes, one for each Mac. The separate TM volumes, one per Mac, is necessary because Apple does not deal properly with low-diskspace issues when multiple Mac's share the same TM volume (nothing breaks, it's just that one Mac can hog the whole drive and there is no Mac-to-Mac TM communication to ask it to nicely remove some old backups on behalf of another Mac trying to use the TM volume).

Anyway, I couldn't figure out why only the default TimeMachine share on my NV+ was working after the upgrade to Lion, even with 4.1.8+ and having rebooted the ReadyNAS twice.
I had to go in and make all my TM volumes in /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default have the same options as the default one in /var/lib/timemachine/.AppleVolumes.

Now Lion works with my NV+ as well as it ever did under Snow Leopard!

Thanks guys! You did great, turning this fix around so quickly.

OH, and I can also attest that the fix is backward compatible with Snow Leopard, so nothing is broken!

Thanks for the tip & great work on fixing the firmware so fast
You don't need to reboot the device btw
as root:
/etc/init.d/netatalk [start|stop|force-reload]
will do the trick

Is there a more permanent fix for this with out having to SSH into the readynas device? I too am using separate APF shares per computer to do time machine backups as I would exceed the 2TB limit with the 30 computers we have at work backing up here.

x86 ReadyNAS (e.g. the 2100, a 4-bay rackmount device) support habit a Time Machine quota higher than 2TB.

Only the Frontview method is supported. If you want to do something else using a config backup restore or SSH is the way to go.

I followed the advice of OP and it worked as described. However, every time my ReadyNAS Duo reboots, the AppleVolumes.default file has reverted to as it was - the "options:tm" has vanished!

Any suggestions as to how I can make it persist?

The AppleVolumes.default file is the "master" file that controls all AFP shares and their setup. As such it can be overwritten at any time by Frontview - not just at reboot but also if you make changes to your share setup.

Seems to me your best bet is to lobby Netgear to add an option to Frontview to enable/disable TM support for a share

Our next release will preserve this setting if you manually configure it.

What about us poor souls that have the old NV+ machines that are running 4.1.7?

mattebury you can try the 4.1.8 beta (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=55155). If you don't want to try the beta, then I'd recommend you don't update your Macs to Lion yet.

Just confirming that T9 appears to sort out the issue I was having whereby the edit to AppleVolumes.default did not stick.
