NVX Drive problems (case# 16278550)

Postby jdog62 » Fri Jul 29, 2011 4:30 pm

Hello,

I have a recently replaced NVX. My last one had a power supply failure. When I took the drives out of the old and put them in the new one in the same order I got message saying that channel two had failed. So thinking that one of my drives failed I purchased a new one. I just put the new drive in and now it still thinks I have the old drive in and is still calling it "dead". I now get a message about every 5 minutes or so stating that the volume will be rebuilt with drive 2, but nothing happens. Additionally for about two reboots It said that channel 1 was dead too, but now it's fine.

I looked in the expansion log and it says "mdadm: cannot find /dev/sdb5: No such device or address
[2011/07/30 01:20:29 6992] Expand RAID /dev/md2 failed err:0x100, degraded=1, repair=1".

Can someone please help me.

Thanks,

Jason

What version of RAIDIATOR WAS on your old NVX and what is on your new NVX.

What model disks do you have installed? check the HCL to see if they are on the list. See my signature.

I do not remember what the old firmware was, but after I booted up the new system I downloaded the current version 4.2.17. I do know that the old system was not the current version. The old system actually dies a few months ago while I was stationed in Germany, and I had to wait till my stuff got shipped back to the states to RMA the old system. The new drive is seagate XT 2TB (9GV168-301) It is on the list, which is why a bought it.

edit: the seagate is:ST32000641AS

If you download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all Logs) and extract the zip contents and look in initrd.log you'll see the old firmware version.

I can't download the logs from the old system because the system won't turn on.

edit: I apologize, I looked in the logs and it seems the old system was 4.2.16.

You don't do it from the old system. The OS/firmware is installed on the disks, so it will show up in the logs on the new system.

I recommend opening a case with support and posting the number in the title for this thread.

Ok It seems that the drives somehow got rearranged when I put them in the new system. However the tech yesterday told me to reformat Drive 4 to clear the partition table and reinstall the drive. However, it seems the readynas remembers the partition table even after I write all zero's to the drive to clear it. Anyone have any other ideas on how I can clear the partition table? This is getting very frustrating.

TIA....

It is best to delete the partitions rather than format or write zeros to the drive. Either is treated as "data" when the drive is detected. A drive with no partitions that shows up with all the space as "unallocated" will be treated as a new drive.

So do I just erase the free space then? In the disk utility on a Mac which setting will just erase the partition?

How would you do it on Windows?

There is an application within Windows called Disk Management. In Vista and Win7 it is accessible from Control Panel -> System and Security (Win7) or System and Maintenance (Vista) and then you scroll down to Administrative Tools and then click on "Create and format hard drive partitions". Once it opens, select the hard drive you are working on, then click on each partition and then delete. This will turn that drive space to unallocated. As you delete each partition, it will be added to the unallocated space. Once all space is unallocated it will be seen as a new drive.

If you are running XP, post back and I will look up how to access it.
