resetting my hard disk space

Postby shawno » Tue Aug 23, 2011 7:10 am

Hello,

I am running Mac Lion and 4.1.8.T9 successfully, I just have half the time machine hard drive now. (458GB instead of 1TB.)

I am new to Apple mac (had one only since March). So I am trying to figure out how to reset my disk space on my Netgear NASDuo without messing it up. (since it is working fine)

I've noticed a few threads about how to reset the "sparse bundle".

I can see the sparse bundle using the finder. Is it just a matter of moving the sparse bundle to the trash if I'm not worried about my current backup?

Thanks

So I did some more reading and got the invisible sparse bundle file to show up. I have tried deleting it by "moving it to the trash" in finder.

It's been deleting for a day now. How long should this take? 440GB used for time machine.

It says "Deleting shawno iMac.sparsebundle"

items to delete: 0

There doesn't seem to be much going on with the ReadyNAS Duo while this happens.

It took about 4 days using the Finder to delete the sparse bundle...

Problem now is that when I enable "Time Machine" on Frontview it says I have 950 GB out of 1TB available....but after my Mac runs time machine backup once and completes a backup, my Netgear Duo then says my capacity for time machine is only 515 GB again in Frontview as if my old sparse bundle is still there.

I've deleted this sparse bundle twice over a period of two weeks. Is there something I'm missing?

You need to set the quota you want for Time Machine: http://www.readynas.com/TimeMachine

Hmm, I'll set the capacity to 850GB with 950 showing available, click apply, then let the time machine start if thats what you mean by setting the quota.

I come back after a new TM backup and it will say capacity 850GB...max 521 all over again.

After a day of new backups....its stopped again and I get this.

"The backup disk image “/Volumes/ReadyNAS-1/Shawno iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use."

Sounds like you have two separate connections to the "ReadyNAS" share. I would suggest ensuring you've unmounted the sparsebundle and disconnected from the share and try a backup again.

Try a reboot via System > Shutdown doing a quota check. After doing that hopefully a quota change will work fine.

I deleted the sparse bundle. Disconnected via CIFS and AFP on the finder. Rebooted with a quota check.

I go into Frontview and allocated 813 GB ...it shows (max 913).

Went to time machine and started it. It says I have 452GB available out of 872GB available after the first new backup.

I go into Frontview and it is back to showing my allocated 813BG (max 521).

The available space shown on the time machine only shows when it is backing up. Otherwise it shows " --" two dashes.

Doesn't seem like it is showing the appropriate amount of disk usage in front view, but it is working again. Or am I looking at it wrong?
