iTunes client 10.4.1 doesn't show ReadyNAS Library

Postby nas-novice » Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:41 am

Hi,

I have iTunes Streaming Server enabled on the latest version of FireFly on ReadyNAS NV++. Using the free Java Client, I am able to see the iTunes library and play music on my laptop. On the same laptop, my iTunes 10.4.1 is not able to see the library. The SHARED section doesn't show up, and there is no "Look for shared library" in my Edit-Preferences-Share section of iTunes. How do I configure so iTunes client can scan for the ReadyNAS and connect to the library?

Thanks.

I thought this is a simple question and someone would know the answer. Has anyone gotten iTunes 10.4.1 to work with latest FireFly and ReadyNAS NV+? If not, I'm just going to return my stuff and use a different solution.

Did you follow this?: http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18/~/how-to-setup-itunes-streaming-server-on-readynas%3F

In iTunes > Preferences > Parental ensure "Disable: Shared Libraries" is unchecked.

Are you connecting over ethernet or wireless?

Thanks for helping out. On your questions below:

Did you follow this?: http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/ ... eadynas%3F

In iTunes > Preferences > Parental ensure "Disable: Shared Libraries" is unchecked.

Are you connecting over ethernet or wireless?

I followed steps 1 to 5 per the instructions. However, Step 6 says:

Connecting to the iTunes server:

1.The easiest way to connect to an iTunes server is by using the iTunes program. Start iTunes and click on the Shared iTunes server, this will connect you to the iTunes server running on your ReadyNas and will load your music listing.

But the trouble is that the "Shared" section is completely missing on my iTunes. Some other board posts said go to "Edit->Preferences->Shared and click "Look for shared folders" but that is missing completely. Going to "General->Shared Library" and checking it on also doesn't work.

Also Edit->Preferences->Parental Control->Shared Libraries

is already unchecked.

Completely lost...

Also, I'm attempting to connect over wireless

The free Java Client from FireFly (FireflyClient-v0.9b-20081231) for connecting to FireFly connects fine to the NAS and is able to show songs in the list, so it is more than likely a iTunes Client problem.

If you connect via ethernet does this make a difference?

If you make a direct-connection over ethernet does this make a difference?: http://sphardy.com/web/directconnect

Do you have a firewall on your PC? If so does temporarily disabling this make a difference?

Edit: sounds like it could be a problem with Bonjour advertising on your network.

Fantastic! Direct ethernet connection of my iTunes client (Windows 7 laptop) to the same LAN as the ReadyNAS NV+ makes it show up in iTunes Client!!! Thanks so much for help. Now, how do I get it to work with wireless? Is it the Bonjour or some protocol not enabled or not working?

Thanks again!

It's either a configuration issue with your router or the router's incompatible.

What wireless router do you have?

Can you enable multicasting on your router?

My Router is a Netgear Wireless Router RangeMax WPN824 which is a very popular router I think. Just to be clear, when I said Direct Connect, I meant connection to one of the open Ethernet ports on the router for my laptop. Coincidentally, the same router has another port open which is connected to the ReadyNAS.

Yes it's an issue affecting wireless access not ethernet access.

You might want to open a tech support case (http://www.readynas.com/support). They may know a setting you can change on this router that will enable this to work over wireless.

The fault is highly likely to be your router. There are a number that demonstrate these symptoms over wireless (ie not supporting bonjour/mdns advertisements as used by iTunes and apple products in general) - to name some that I've come across:

Netgear WGT624 v3 wireless router (and Wireless-G units in general)
Home Box from TDC (Sagem F@ast 3464)
Thomson routers in general, but specifically:
- BT Home Hub
- O2 Router
- Telia Homegateway
Billion modem/router
Belkin Playmax F7D 4401
Belkin Play
Tiscali Siemens
Trendnet TEW-639GR

So it is not an isolated problem. Some routers (eg Dlink) do have options that may fix the issue - look for anything related to multicast or broadcast over wireless and toggle those options. You may get lucky

Network: Netgear GS108Tv2 / DM111P :: Airport Extreme / Express & Time Capsule
Clients: OS X 10.6 - 10.8 :: Ubuntu 11.x :: Win 7 + SP#1
UPS: APC ES-550
