Lion Time Machine still not working for me (NV+ 4.1.8)

Postby jglasson » Sat Sep 10, 2011 7:38 am

I just updated to the final 4.1.8 on my NV+ and still can't get Time Machine to work. Note I never put a beta version of FW on my NAS.

I enabled the Time Machine service and set a password, but my Mac can't see the the ReadyNAS in the Time Machine control panel.

There is no ReadyNAS user or share that I can see and if I try to mount a share as another user, it shows up in the TM control panel, but I get errors saying the server does not support the proper AFP version.

Normal AFP mounts do work, though.

I used to have the old manually created TM sparse disk, and deleted my share that had those, but still no luck.

If I log in with ssh, I see the ReadyNAS user in /etc/passed with a home directory of /var/lib/timemachine.

Help!

Thanks,
Jeff

I also can't see the ReadyNAS from another Mac still running 10.6.8.

WIth more playing around, I was able to get this to work by not using wireless to find the NAS. Once I selected the disk, it then started working over a wireless connection.
Could there be some strange setting I need to change in my wireless router?

Hello Jeff, are you saying that when you used a wired connection you were able to use time machine?

Not all wireless routers are compatible with Time Machine. Some will work if a setting change is made.

If it works over ethernet via the router then there's a compatibility or setting issue. Try enabling multicasting.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Time Machine has also stopped working for me (on 4.1.8 ). Yesterday both my iMacs backed up using Time Machine, today neither machine can see the ReadyNAS Time Machine and rebooting ReadyNAS and iMacs hasn't helped.

Any idea anyone?

My router does work with Time Machine, well it did when I was running 4.1.7...

Now I can only get TM to work running 4.1.8 if am on ethernet. Nothing has changed settings wise on the router or ReadyNAS other than the upgrade to 4.1.8. Is multicasting a feature of the router?

Well everything worked yesterday for me, same router, ethernet wired, etc. but Time Machine can't find the ReadyNAS today (on both Macs). Both Macs can connect via AFP, etc through Finder - just Time Machine is not playing ball.

TimeMachine - and most Apple services - are advertised via Mulitcast DNS (Apple calls this Bonjour). Some wireless routers seem to have issues supporting mDNS over WiFi (see here) and the symptoms you are seeing are similar to that issue (probably prompting mdgm's comments)

That you didn't have issues before is quite odd - are you sure nothing re. Your network has changed?

One possibility is that you previously setup TM while connected via wired Ethernet and then moved to wireless - this has been reported to work for users as it appears TM caches the address needed to connect to the TM service and doesn't need the bonjour advertisement once setup. Also disabling and re-enabling the TM service should reset the bonjour advertisements, so try that also

There is a free app called Bonjour Browser (Google it) that will show all the advertisements your Mac can see - might be worth downloading to see if you see anything on your network. Maybe you could try disabling and re-enabling the Bonjour service on your NAS to see if anything shows up in

RAIDiator 4.1.8 seems to have an issue with Bonjour and connecting via a device's name. If you connect via ip address its working fine in my experience. Manually connect with finder to the readynas manually (go -> connect to server) and put in the username/pass@ip address (afp://READYNAS:password@192.168.1.2) and it mounted the network share. Then from time Machine i was able to select readynas backup and it works. I had no issues with doing this wirelessly or wired. Pre Lion and with 4.1.7 it worked fine wirelessly too so I don't think that is the issue most people are having.

Yep that worked for me :-) So we need a fix for 4.1.8 it seems ?

Thanks

This only confirms the issue is bonjour related - again I'd recommend disabling and re-enabling the TM service to force the bonjour setup to be reset as the best chance to ensure the configuration is not corrupted

This worked for me too! Thanks bunch!

I thought I was having a terrible bonjour or router issue based on the info from sphardy but inputting my login manually while connecting to the readynas IP fixed it. It appears this may be a bug somehow.

*EDIT* I just saw sphardy's reply and i have reset my bonjour service, TM service, router, Mac, and readynas when changing configs and the manual password input is all that has worked.

I'm glad to hear that my method worked for 2 more people so it seems to be a solution. Now if only someone from netgear will see this and address it.

I don't think the issue is bonjour related specifically but with connecting via device name. Bonjour sees it, then when you try connecting it will disappear when it is not able to connect. Bonjour uses the device name such as "afp://NAS" or "afp://AFP%20on%20NAS._afpovertcp._tcp.local" is the actual connection mine used. If you try to manually connect via device name it will not connect either.

I just enabled 4.1.8 and I could mount AFP shares fine via Bonjour. So I don't think there's a Bonjour issue with 4.1.8 (I did update from a 4.1.8 beta).

I haven't tested Time Machine yet but my Mac can see that it's there.

I would suggest opening tech support cases (http://www.readynas.com/support). If NetGear can reproduce the issue and confirm that it's an issue with the firmware then it'll be addressed in a firmware update.

Do note that only backing up using Time Machine via the official method is supported: http://www.readynas.com/timemachine

If using the older method then you'll get the error stating that the server doesn't support the required features. You can fix this by making a manual config change: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=55166
