Strange boot issue

Postby BadBrad » Sat Sep 17, 2011 8:44 am

Sometimes (not always) when I power on my readynas duo, it proceeds through the boot process with the normal LED sequence but I am unable to access the device. It appears to have no IP address assigned. I confirmed this since I have my router reserve a specific IP address for it and when I ping that address, the nas does not respond. Also Raidar does not see it either. If I shutdown and then power on the NAS, it almost always comes up and is accessible the second time. I had this problem under 4.1.6 and it is still present under 4.1.8.

I will note that my readynas has attached to it a Seagate freeagent desk 1TB external USB drive for which my automated backups are placed onto. It is the case that I have the sleep timer for the freeagent desk set such that it does not automatically go into sleep mode after a certain amount of time. I will note that when the readynas performs its scheduled shutdown close to midnight, the main LED on the freeagent goes off and the freeagent drive stops spinning. The freeagent receives separate power and is not powered by the USB port. I only mention the USB drive since this is one configuration I have that may differ from most peoples configurations.

Any ideas what might be happening here?

Update

Postby BadBrad » Thu Sep 22, 2011 2:03 pm

This morning, I received a non stop blinking blue LED with fan at high speed when the unit tried to auto power-on. I was unable to use the 5-sec hold on the power switch to power off. I eventually cut power by pulling the power plug.

Upon restarting, the unit powered on fine and I had full access to my data. To be sure, I did a software initiated reboot via frontview with the file system check option specified. After rebooting and the file system check completing , Radiator reported no file system errors.

Question: What , if anything, do these symptoms indicate?

Thanks,
Brad

Still getting occasional power up problems when the duo powers on the morning.

Any suggestions on tests I can run or logs I can look at. I do have root ssh enabled, so I can look at /var/log

Note; I would be interested in trying the built in memory test, but as I understand it if I hold down the power on button for 30 seconds the data will be wiped from the drives, but to do the memory test I need to hold the power on button for about 25 seconds. I do not want to risk wiping the drives by accidentally holding the power button too long.

Are my assumptions regarding running the memory test and the risk of wiping the drives by holding the button to long correct? What about accidentally doing a firmware reset?

Thanks,
Brad

Sadly i cannot offer any help, but you are not alone. I have the exact same issue: about once per week my ReadyNas Duo will fail to boot; the fan will be on high, with the blue LED flashing and the disk lights will be off; the only way to resolve this is to pull the power, after which it will boot up fine.

I was contemplating changing out the PSU to see if that made any difference, any other ideas welcome.

Best Regards,

Darren

Hi Darren,

Sorry it took so long for me to reply to your post.

I wanted to let you know that shortly after making these posts, I discovered the UPS socket I was plugging the duo into was full of dust. Upon cleaning out the power sockets on the UPS, I no longer have the reboot problems with my NAS.

I feel silly for not having checked out the UPS first. At least I am happy to have a NAS that boots properly again.
