Wordpress: internal and external access

Postby vx700 » Mon Dec 05, 2011 4:59 am

Hi, I'm trying to set up wordpress on my ReadyNAS Pro so that I can access it from within my network, and externally.

I think i've installed it all correctly and have no problems accessing it internally, but when i try and access it from outside of my network the page does not load images and all links refer back to my internal IP address (e.g. http://10.1.1.99/wordpress/?p=1).

If I change my Wordpress settings under Settings > General > WordPress Address (URL) = http://example.com - i can then access my wordpress externally to my network with no problems, but then can not access it internally - meaning I can't update it from home.

Is there a way to set it up so i can access it from both within my network, and externally?

You must setup with the external name and have a router that supports "NAT Loopback" - it would appear based on your description the latter requirement is your issue.

You could install a local DNS server to overcome this, but the easiest solution would be to change your router

NAS: Ultra-4, NV+ & Duo v2 :: ST31500341AS & HDS723020BLA642 Drives
Network: Netgear GS108Tv2 / DM111P :: Airport Extreme / Express & Time Capsule
Clients: OS X 10.6 - 10.8 :: Ubuntu 11.x :: Win 7 + SP#1
UPS: APC ES-550

Depending on how many machines this affects, you might update the local hosts file on each so that the domain name resolves to the local IP address of the NAS.

On windows I believe it is typically at: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc, and /etc/hosts on any *nix based OS

My router also doesn't do loopback, would it be possible to set the router dns to point at the nas and use the readynas as a dns server?

Yes - if you have a DNS service installed on the NAS

NAS: Ultra-4, NV+ & Duo v2 :: ST31500341AS & HDS723020BLA642 Drives
Network: Netgear GS108Tv2 / DM111P :: Airport Extreme / Express & Time Capsule
