Postby Teryon » Wed Feb 08, 2012 7:50 am

Hi,

Before buying a new NAS, I need to know if streaming 1080p mkv video file to an iPhone4/iPAd2, works ok on a Readynas Ultra ?
Is the nas powerfull enough ?

Thanks.

Teryon.

Not an Apple user/fan, but I do have an iPod (broken iPhone actually) stuffed in a a draw. I'll charge it up and see what is possible. That said, I'm fairly certain I've seen posts on here saying they've done it before though and without too much trouble.

Plex is jumping to mind for some reason, but I'm not sure why...? (Never used Plex either.)

Works using Plex or FileBrowser on iPad2

Readynas Ultra is not powerful enough to transcode 1080p mkv files. If the iPhone/IPad can play the file native then that will work

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Plus and have the same issue streaming files to my PS3. Not tried to stream to my iPad yet but I will let you know

Just to clarify - Transcoding is needed if the iPhone/iPad doesn't support the codecs (not the MKV itself, but the compressed media in it). Other reasons for transcoding are if the WiFi network can't support the bitrate, or if the playback device doesn't support the resolution.

I use plex on my ultra 2+ and an ipad 1st gen. I have 1080p that streams perfect and some that needs to buffer every 5 minutes. 99% of my 720p if perfect but I have one 720p movie that buffers every 5 to 10 minutes. I'm not very tech savy but it seems to me, the bigger the file size the harder for my little ultra + to keep up.

Over all i love it, but if you have alot of 1080p I think you need to go bigger and better. Oh, it streams to my laptop without a problem aswell using plex.

I think you are jumping to a conclusion that the Ultra is the problem. There are several other possibilities.

For instance, it could also be the WiFi connection to the iPad. I don't see how it would be related to file size itself, though it certainly could be related to the peak bitrates in the files. Are you trying to stream 1080p over 802.11G?

I would say you are correct, as I said Im only a novice. My router uses 802.11n.

My ultra 2+ streams to my laptop using plex flawlessly via the same wifi router. I only have had this problem with my iPad and only a few movies. So if you think its related to bitrates, should I wind back the video quality in settings and see how it goes?

You could try winding back the quality settings and see what happens.

Also, you can use mediainfo (www.videohelp.com/tools/mediainfo) to look deeper at the codecs and other aspects of the media. If the playback problems are repeatable, and only happen with a few movies that can help sort out what is happening.
