ReadyNAS won't boot 1 disk dead, 1 hurting lost videos

Postby brathjen » Mon Feb 20, 2012 9:14 am

My readynas NV has 4 disks. 1 of them went dead a month ago, without any email notifications, then a 2nd encountered an AT error (count 1). That is when I first noticed any issues with the unit. At the time, only part of the shares were accessible

I tried rebooting the readynas, but what happens is file system check goes to 5.6% or so after 10 hours and then the unit no longer is accessible by RAIDar. Another problem is that I don't have the log anymore to see the details of what happened. All I know is the volume and disks 2 and 4 were yellow when I first got to RAIDar.

I have 2 replacement disks, but wanted to know if there is a way to try to recover the volume in it's current state so I don't lose video files that were not part of the offsite back-up scheme.

Also, when I do put the new disk(s) in, I'm assuming I have to start from scratch?

Thanks for your help.

So this is a NV not a NV+? When did you purchase this? Was it on/after Aug 21, 2007?

This an NV, not an NV+ purchased before 2007.

Well you could try powering down, cloning the disk that failed last using dd_rescue: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=59746&p=335992#p335992, putting the clone in the NAS and then seeing if the NAS will boot.

Thank you mdgm. This worked perfectly. If anyone else has the same problem, this is the way to go. Even if you don't have a SATA controller, it's worth the $20 to get one.
Appreciate the help.
