ReadyNas NV+ V2 npermission denied for admin c access

Greets -
I'm trying to get c drive access on my nv+ v2 nas, and consistently get "System Error 5 // Access Denied" when using the net use command in a win 7 console. Same result using the graphical version.
My need is to re-arrange some folders buried deep inside a share, which was created during a backup from external USB. I love that feature, but being an "all or nothing" backup does suck. Per prior posts, I should be able to map the NAS c drive, and move files at will without having to pass back and forth over the network.

Fro starters, I can browse shares, including the user share, map network drives, use the net use for a share(user) called thyde and gain access.

Stats: ReadyNAS NV+ V2 with current version of Dashboard (note Frontview is no longer available for this unit, so please don't post the usual "security mode" links!)
Win 7 Ult, 32 bit, admin access, firewall taken down, no other security software active
Have removed both by explorer view and net use command, all network shares/mapped drives, etc.
NAS and computer are hardwired to my LAN, both on the "workgroup" workgroup. All machines show up in network view. My Sony media center sees the NAS just fine.
Have added and removed a user, matching my computer name in the Dashboard user accounts page

command format in a win 7 console: "net use \\readynas.ip.address\c /user:admin" and am asked for password, entering variety of passwords, including the old "password/netgear1/infrant1" and of course the actual password I use for Dashboard.

I have changed the Dashboard password to 4 characters, 6 characters, 8 characters, with and without upperCaSe and NumB3rs.... have cold rebooted in between steps. I can of course, log into Dashboard.

I know that the path is available, for I can "net use \\readynas.ip.address\thyde /user:thyde" works just fine (but it's not at the root level, so doesn't gain me anything)
I can "net use \\readynas.ip.address\admin /user:admin" and that, as expected, fails with a "path not found" error. The user "root" also does not exist. So at least I know the NAS is looking up credentials.

Other posts have indicated that the x86 versions of the NV+ (the v2, in particular) no longer offer "share" access, and are "user" access by default. So once again, please don't post a link to the "Frontview simulator".....

Is there another buried password for the "Admin" user in the V2?

I had exactly this same problem with the ReadyNas Duo V2 - Couldn't get past it... Any suggestions?

Dito problem on duo v2 here. It sucks big time. Never had this isseu on old duo v1.

I see where the issue is. The 'admin' user isn't part of the Samba user database. I will file a bug against 5.3.4 to have this added.

On the v1 and other platforms, when the admin user changes his password system-wide, he was added to the Samba file also. The v2 does not appear to do this at this time.

If you have SSH access enabled, you can add 'admin' manually via: smbpasswd -a admin

So yeah, this is STILL a problem. Pretty much preventing me from using my NAS. How did "admin access to shares doesn't work" slip through QA?

FYI, none of the numerous workarounds for previous versions of firmware/product will fix this issue. Tried all of those before I found this. Will try to add via SSH while waiting, hope that works.

If you prefer I could write a quick add-on that checks /etc/samba/smbpasswd to see if it has a line for "admin" and if not run the command chirpa mentioned.

5.3.5 firmware will have this corrected.

I now have 5.3.5 but I am still getting the apple 'wobble' when I try admin password (which is still set to this default). So what do I do now?

After updating to 5.3.5 (or later) you need to change the admin password once regardless of whether you've changed it on prior firmware or not. Then you can access the shares as the "admin" user.

Leaving the password as default is not a good idea for security reasons which is one reason why admin access to shares via CIFS isn't granted till the admin password is changed at least once.

Thanks again. It's always easy when you know how - password changed and I can access the C folder through Finder.

However I only see the two sparsebundles that I set up. The original sparsebundle does not appear - yet I have not deleted it (as I could not before the new release), confused yet again!

You might wish to contact tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) about that and open a new thread with the case number in the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in the thread).

They could have a look at your logs and see if there are some clues in those.

Does the space used on the NAS indicate that the sparsebundle is still there?

Solved, I had forgotten that the dot files were not being displayed. Once I had these displayed I was able to delete the hidden sparse bundle.
