Readynas NV not resyncing

Postby subrama6 » Wed Mar 07, 2012 2:45 am

I copied a bunch of data to my NV (it contains 4 2Gb WD20EARS drives) a few days ago. That procedure went fine, but the next day when I tried to mount the RN from a machine on the network, I couldn't see it - neither could RAIDAR. I did get an email from it saying that it recommended a resync, though I don't remember at what point that happened.

In any case, after not being able to find it in RAIDAR, Frontview or mount it for about a day, I hard powered it down and then back up. RAIDAR was then able to find it, and it claimed to be resyncing. During this process, I was unable to launch Frontview or mount the NAS, but RAIDAR was able to consistently see it. It seemed like the resync was hung - for over 24 hours, the tooltip status hovering on the volume disk was that it was at 73% with 5 minutes to go. Tooltip status of all 4 drives appeared normal, so nothing indicating a bum disk - but I still couldn't mount the NAS or connect via Frontview.

After about 60 hours with no progress, I hard powered down the NAS again and turned it back on. Same thing - RAIDAR sees it, and the tooltip claims it's resyncing (though this time it's been stuck at 0% for about 5 hours), and the tooltips on the individual drives don't indicate a problem. But I can't connect via Frontview or mount the drives.

Does anyone have any suggestions? At this point, I was thinking a firmware reset, but I'm not sure if that'll be helpful at all. I'm running 4.1.8, by the way

i should note - i do not have a PC, so doing a disk test that way will be difficult.

update: this morning, i power cycled the nas again, but this time kept the power button depressed for 5 seconds to skip file system checking. raidar reports it resyncing as before, but now i am able to access it via frontview. i was able to download the logs. having never looked at them before, i'm not sure how to interpret them to decide if there's an issue with the unit or one of the drives. would someone with more experience mind taking a peek at them? if someone is willing, what's the best way to get them to you? pm the zip? post the dump of some select ones?

huh - i JUST got an email that the RAID resync is complete... i'm at work, so i'm unable to check about mounting the drives and data integrity, but i guess this is a good sign...

If you would like to, I would suggest opening the logs and looking at disk_smart.log and verify that you do not have a large number of reallocated sectors, or ATA errors on any of the drives. If you do, that could be the cause of the issue that you are currently experiencing, and you will want to replace the drive in question.

thanks so much for the suggestion - here's what i found

i see lines like this for the sectors (for all 4 drives):

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always - 0

i also see this line for all 4 drives:

SMART Error Log Version: 1
No Errors Logged

as far as these 4 entries:

Raw_Read_Error_Rate
Seek_Error_Rate
UDMA_CRC_Error_Count
Multi_Zone_Error_Rate

they are 0 for all drives, with the exception of multi_zone which is 443 on the first drive, with the type "old_age". i'm not sure how important that is.

does that cover the places in the log where i'd be looking for red flags?

The "old_age" is not anything you need to worry about. The fact that all of the drives are showing 0 reallocated sectors and no ATA errors is a sign of a healthy set of drives. Have you tried doing a files system check since the successful RAID resynch?

If you haven't I would suggest running one, now that we know we have healthy drives. To do so, under System > Shutdown, select shutdown and reboot and perform file system check. You may want to make sure that this is done at a time that the NAS is not in use; it may take a while.

not yet - i'm still at work for another few hours, and haven't set up the port forwarding to be able to access the nas remotely. my first step once i get home is to try and mount drives, make sure frontview loads...etc. then i'll certainly do an FS check and report back. thanks again for the help :)

Not a problem. I'm glad that I could help. Let me know if there's a problem with the FS check again.

so interestingly, the fs completed on reboot, i can mount the nas from my laptop and everything seems good.

but now the logs look like this:

Wed Mar 7 18:22:08 CST 2012 A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime.
Wed Mar 7 18:19:13 CST 2012 System is up.
Wed Mar 7 18:17:41 CST 2012 Volume scan found and corrected errors.
Wed Mar 7 16:33:28 CST 2012 Rebooting device...

i wonder if i should both doing another resync...

status in the volumes tab looks like this:

Configuration: X-RAID (Expandable RAID), 4 disks
Status: Redundant

so now i just got this email - it doesn't specify the bad disk, though, unfortunately:

Access to the disk on channel (??) is producing I/O errors. Although the array is still redundant, please replace this drive as soon as possible, as it is likely to fail soon.

[Wed Mar 7 20:17:04 CST 2012]

is there an easy way for me to narrow down which is the faulty one?

looking at the smart information for each drive again, the only one that seems different from the others is the current pending sector count (158 as opposed to 0 for the rest) and offline uncorrectable (1 as opposed to 0 for the others) of disk 1.

Have you had a look at the disk_smart logs?

Do you have SSH access?

i don't have ssh access enabled, and i just powered down the nas to be safe, hoping that i could sort out which disk to replace solely from the logs. but i certainly can power it back up and enable ssh access if that's not possible.

here's a dump of the disk_smart.log file. to my eyes, everything looks ok outside of the stuff i previously mentioned about disk 1. but frankly, i don't really know what to be looking for :)
