Sparsebundle size in Dashboard

Postby Martin4x4 » Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:06 am

I've seen lots of post on setting the sparsebundle size but they all seem to refer to doing it in FrontView.

Using dashboard, how can I see the size I have set for parsebundle? Or how can I limit the size when I am using ReadyNAS to back up two Macs?

There is the one limit for both Macs. It's both the individual and collective limit. On the Dashboard, click Configure then go to Backup > Time Machine. You can set the quota/limit there.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

I am still a little confused. This is currently set at 120.8GB of 935GB, I am backing up two Macs MacBook with 64/80Gb and iMac with 175/500GB - so why does it allow backups to take place? What should I set it to? What does the Password on this screen do? How do I know what the password is?
The current volume status is 450GB free of 914GB, and I have the sparsebundle of the original iMac back up that I will delete as soon as this is possible.

I also have two Windows machines backing up using Acronis.
PS is your picture of two shock absorbers? I can't quite make it out.

You need the limit to be higher than the amount of data your backing up i.e. higher than 240GB. I'd be inclined to set it higher than that still so it can keep multiple versions of files, allow for growth in data etc.

It sets the password for Time Machine. When you first choose to backup using Time Machine to the NAS you will be prompted to enter the credentials "ReadyNAS" (no quotes) as the username and the password you set.

Lost of people think that. Actually I think it's a picture of a couple of light-sabers I found on the web somewhere.
