Unable to change "share folder group" FIXED in 4.1.10 [T3]

Postby AlecEdworthy » Sat Mar 24, 2012 5:38 pm

If you have run into this issue please upgrade to 4.1.10: http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_4_1_10_Notes
You can then use the Advanced Options tab (go to Shares > Share Listing > Sharename then click on e.g. CIFS and you'll see the tab) to reset the ownership to what you want. You can use the Set ownership and permission for existing... option. Don't forget to click Apply to make your changes

It appears that I am unable to change the "Share folder group" while running 4.1.9 [t6]. I previously had it set to "users" which is the group my users are in on my ReadyNAS Duo. However when I upgraded to 4.1.9 [t6] this changed to "nogroup" and despite numerous attempts to change it back to "users" it fails, each time when I click "Apply" the webpage submits and a second or two later when it refreshes it reverts to "nogroup". The result of this is that unless I set "share folder everyone rights" to "Read/write" my users do not have access to create files and folders in the root of the share, sub-folders on which they previously had permissions are OK but the root is effectively read-only. If I downgrade to 4.1.8 I can change the "Share folder group" and regain write access to the root, so it appears to be an issue with 4.1.9 [t6] unfortunately.

If I can provide any further logs or information, or run any tests, please do not hesitate to ask.

Kind regards, Alec

There is a possiblity that it could be an issue with the beta firmware. I suggest that you just stay with the official release unless the new beta addresses specific problem that you have.

Hi arjoseph,

Don't worry, I've come into the beta with my eyes wide open (I've been involved in enough beta programmes in my time to understand the pros and cons to the testers here and the risks we're taking). It is because there is a possibility that this is an issue with this beta firmware that I have raised the issue here. If there is somewhere else I should have raised it as a potential beta issue then please do let me know. If this does turn out to be an issue with the T6 beta then hopefully someone will be able to fix it before the next beta release, failing that then before the next production release. If on the other hand it is not an issue with the beta firmware then it is something I am doing wrong or wrong with my ReadyNAS and so I need to tackle that myself.

Kind regards, Alec

You may also try contacting support so for it. Just change the subject by appending the case number from support.

I wouldn't have thought support would have been willing or able to provide assistance with this because it's a beta release issue. Can anyone closer to support confirm or deny this?

Thanks, Alec

Hi,

I notice this bug still exists in T15. Is it likely to get fixed (or a workaround released) before the firmware goes final?

Thanks, Alec

The bug is still present in the 4.1.9 release. I've started a thread at,

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,
Seems that there are at least one more with similar problems; http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=64230.
What 'Security Mode' are you using (Share/User/Domain)?
If Domain, which 'domain type' are you then using?
Hope you get a solution soon!

I have a Duo so I don't think there is the concept of security mode is there? The Duo operates in User mode all the time doesn't it?

Correct. The Duo (v1) which you have only has User mode. There are a number of threads on this issue. I've sent a PM to a dev. Hopefully he or someone in his team will be able to take a look soon.

Hi,

Same problem here.
I updated this morning to 4.1.9. Since the update has finished i am not able to use a shared folder or ftp.
Hope a solution is available soon :)

Edit:
I just tried to login with ssh and had success. I was also able to copy a file with scp to my machine.
So the files are still present and ok.

Same problem here. can not access any directories with nouser/nogroup set. I can't even CD into them via SSH so I know it is not a windows problem. I can access them if I am set to superuser though. this is seriously broken!! I can not access anything with out changing all of my user/group settings which I do not want to do.

After i realized that i cannot access my data i installed the EnableRootSSH plugin. Then i used putty to do an ssh connection to the NAS. I logged in with user "root" and my admin password.
When i logged in i do a "cd .." to go to the root. here i can see a symlink "mysharename" that points to /c/mysharename. If I cd to /c/mysharename and do an ls i see all my data.
I can do the same steps using WinSCP to comfortable copy my data to my Windows PC.

So I don't think that this is a serious problem. The data is still there, but cannot be accessed the normal ways because of the permission fail.
