Readynas Duo to NV+ transfers

Postby 937carrera » Fri Apr 06, 2012 6:32 am

I have had my Duo for a few years & have been very happy with it, but it became full.

Have now acquired a NV+ and installed 4 x 2TB Seagate ST32000641AS drives in it and after a couple of days initialising and expanding have 5.5GB available.

I have been transferring data from the Duo to the NV+ using Backupjobs and Windows/NAS Timestamp protocol.(so the PC has no influence)

Like many on the board I have been experiencing poor performance. My experience is as follows:
Duo- running RAIDiator 4.1.6 in all cases

NV+ backup from Duo, RAIDiator 4.1.8, connected through 10/100 router 2.7mb/s
NV+ backup from Duo, RAIDiator 4.1.8, connected through Gigabit switch 3.1mb/s
NV+ backup from Duo, RAIDiator 4.1.8t6, connected through Gigabit switch 3.5mb/s
Duo backup to NV+, RAIDiator 4.1.8t6, connected through Gigabit switch 7.5mb/s
Duo backup to NV+, RAIDiator 4.1.7, connected through Gigabit switch 9.1mb/s

I have not tried a direct connection between the boxes as I would not be able to create / modify the backup jobs

This still seems to be some way short of the 25-40mb/s expectation

It seems that 4.1.7 performs better than 4.1.8 and the betas

It also seems that initiating the backup job from the source device is more than twice as fast as initiating the job from the destination device. Is this expected ?

Is there anything else I can do to speed things up?

The best rate I have seen is about 30GB /hour which means over a day to transfer data from NAS to NAS

Thanks in advance

The ReadyNAS units are Linux boxes. Best to use NFS which is a native Linux protocol not CIFS for ReadyNAS to ReadyNAS backups. Then switch to using Rsync for incrementals.

I tried that first but for some reason the backup job kept failing / I couldn't authenticate. I'll give that another go though.

I've seen lots of your posts - any idea why a push, rather than pull copy is faster ?

Enable NFS on one NAS and configure the share settings for NFS so that the other NAS is a root privilege enabled host. Then go to the other NAS and configure the backup job.

Well, that seemed to work :D

I have just copied a 8.8GB file in 6 minutes, after creating the backup job on the DUO, thats about 24.4mb/s on a push basis.

I have set another job running on a pull basis, will post the results later

thanks

I have now done the test on a pull basis

Copied another 7.6GB, this time it took 14 minutes, about 9mb/s :(

So NFS method is certainly faster, probably by a factor of 2.5 whichever NAS I use.

Pushing the files from the DUO is also around 2.5x faster than pulling them from the NV+

Is this normal ??

I can't immediately see why that would be the case :?

Another update:

Having tested with copying from the NV+ I went back to the DUO and transferred some more files and am now only getting 9mb/s or 30gb / hour

any more insights ??
