2nd LAN port

Postby dsm1212 » Fri May 04, 2012 7:40 pm

Pro6. I've never hooked up the second LAN port because my Cisco switch doesn't support lacp. But I'm wondering if I can configure the two ports with different ips and then configure services to use particular ones. Like Dlna on port 1, plex on port 2, or all wan traffic on one port and LAN on the other. Is either of these possible? Just point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Am I crazy? Or has no one ever tried to do this?

I don't see a huge performance advantage in trying this.

On the inbound direction, you would simply connect to the correct interface's IP address.

Outbound traffic is more problematic, you would need to find a way to bind each service to an interface. Not sure this is possible.

Oops, sorry for the silly question. I never plugged the second wire in. I didn't realize it would offer me the non-lacp options on frontview. I thought I read somewhere lacp was required for this box, but alb bonding seems to work fine. Doh!

If anyone has done any testing with the different bonding types on a pro let us know your results.

Thanks,
Steve

LACP is best if your switch supports it, but there are other teaming modes available. Different teaming modes have different advantages that suit different users. The various modes are described briefly here: http://www.readynas.com/?p=1130

Just to followup, I've been using Adaptive Load Balancing for a couple of months since my switch doesn't support LACP and it works great. Thanks!
