Whatever name i choose for a new share is invalid

Postby perzec » Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:03 am

I have a strange problem. I just installed my ReadyNAS NV+ v2 and now I'm trying to create a few shares. It seems to be impossible. Whatever name i try for my shares, I get the same reply: "Invalid share name or illegal characters in name" etc.

No matter what name i choose, the response is always the same, so it can't be that it's reserved names, unless Netgear have gotten incredibly creative in reserving just about every word on the planet. I only use letters, lowercase, so that should not be the problem either.

Any thoughts for what the trouble might be?

That sounds like an interesting predicament. I would start by clearing browser cache. This should make sure that you aren't having a strange recall of a reference on the browser.
Also make sure that there are no spaces, as they aren't supported either. To ensure that you aren't getting any spaces from a form auto fill, or something strange; make sure that you select all in the field and delete it prior to trying to enter the name.

What firmware are you using?
Have you tried another browser?

I have tried in a different browser with the same result, and on two different computers even. There are no strange spaces, as I don't use autofill I didn't expect there to be either.

I have firmware RAIDiator 5.3.4 which should be the latest available.

Now that I go through the tabs, I notice something interesting; in Shares and Browse, I can see my volume c, standard volume I suppose, and the shares and folders there. On System, there is absolutely nothing under the dropdown Volumes. Could this have something to do with it?

I have EXACTLY the same problem as described. Any ideas? Thank you.

Fatory reset also did the job for me. Did exactly the same setup the second time, but this time it worked as expected.... :o

I'm having this problem with mine today. Just bought it, followed the user guide, logged into it and got the rather pretty interface. Went to make a new share, and it won't let me, presenting me with the error perzec was presented with.

I'm gonna try and do a complete wipe, since I've not been able to copy anything onto it yet. I'll post back with my findings, if there are any.

I had the same problem yesterday after firing mine up for the first time.

Software & firmware are all bang up to date and I wasn't trying to use any 'reserved' names. Left the office late last night a very frustrated man and had hoped to find the answer here today but obviously I'm not the only one with this problem.

Not sure if this will help anyone, it might just be I was lucky. I performed a full factory reset from the web interface, then used RAIDiator to perform the initial setup again. I can now create shares correctly.

I also noticed that this time, the media directory it creates has more content in it. Before it was completely empty. I'm not sure if the very first time it creates the filesystem, it's flawed somehow.

I decided to try and do a full factory reset, and lo and behold, it worked. Seems that something must've gone wrong the first time around when I did the first install.

Still not sure what happened, but it seems that a factory reset is what it takes to fix the problem.

It does wipe your data, so update your backup first (assuming you actually have data on there).

Same thing here. I just got this and run the setup and can not create any shares. I am also having trouble transfering data to the media share, it seems some how that it thinks my 2x 2TB disks are full...

I ll try a factory reset and see if that works out for me as well.

Me too! I thought perhaps it was because I didn't wait to run the Raidiator/Raidar program until the new drives were finished making the RAID volume.

Did you use RAIDar for the initial setup of the unit? If not, I would recommend doing so. As mentioned in this post, you will need to default in order to do so, defaulting erases all information on the drives, so make sure that the information that you have placed on the NAS is backed up properly before doing so.

Using RAIDar is the preferred setup to use when first configuring a ReadyNAS.

I have done a factory reset now and am waiting for the volumes to sync. I think I know what I did wrong initially. I inserted the disks, ran raidar, clicked setup, then, as nothing appeared to happen, went in to the Raidiator dashboard and tried to use the NAS. no go, so went back and clicked setup again, entered admin and password, went back to dashboard. Of course, I realise now that i didn't give the NAS a chance to create the volume, as there was no green light under the volume column in raidar. This morning when i tried to restart the nas the machine Sent me emails about not being able to read the volume, and the share paths being invalid.

Hopefully now it will work. How do I know when it is ok to use? Will raidiator show a message?

While installing my Readynas NV+ V. 2 I run into the same issue.
What I did was removing the default shares to create my own ones but once deleted the default shares, I was unable to create any kind of new share.
I resetted the device to the factory settings then, instead deleting both the default shares I only deleted "BackUp" and I used the "Media" share changing its name and adding the needed users.
This gaved me the possibility to work properly and to add new shares later.

I hope this help!

Ciao
