just curious about the speed i 'should' be getting when copying over a file from my PC to the readyNAS?
at the moment, if i copy one file, its going at roughly 10MB/second.
that compared to the 50MB/sec when copying from HDD to HDD on my PC.
does this sound right?

It is right if you have a 100 mbit network.
