Trying to Upgrade Ultra 6+ to 4.2.20

Postby gizmoboy » Wed May 16, 2012 5:57 am

Hi,

I just got a new Ultra 6+, and after installing the drives and letting it go thru the factory reset thing, it's up, but at an older version of firmware that doesn't support 3GB drives. (I installed 6 3TB drives in the unit.)

I'm trying to upgrade the firmware from readyView, but every time I try, it fails with a pop-up message of "Error encountered uploading update image"

Now, the minute I tell it to do the upgrade, the screen changes to read "Shutdown Options

Shutdown options are currently unavailable due to an active background task. This page will automatically update when the task is complete. Please attempt shutdown again at a later time."

I assume this is normal behavior, but wanted to mention it in case it's not (I have no idea what to expect for this process).

I tried this on Mac (Safari) and Win7 (Firefox) -- same problem both cases.

Do a factory default with just one disk installed (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu) and then see if you can update to 4.2.20

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Then after verifying the firmware update worked, power down, put the rest of the drives in and do another factory default.

Okay, so after the factory reset, all of the screens in ReadyView have "EMPTY" in them instead of content. If I try to click the Next button in the wizard view, the next page shows as frames with "EMPTY" in them.

If i try to switch to advanced mode, I can navigate thru the menus on the left, but the content panes on the right all have "EMPTY" in their various divs and such.

I tried it from my PC, and in IE9 or Firefox, I can see a (horribly styled) version of the admin site, but when I try to do the update with just the 1 drive installed, it still fails uploading the update image.

Any ideas on what to try next?

What about with an older version of one of those browsers? Can you try clearing the web browser cache (e.g. Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer) and then reopening Frontview?

Don't have any older versions of the browser, but tried clearing all settings (cookies, etc.) and still the same issue. This is frustrating!

Got it!

Was able to get it by doing the "local" update (uploading a copy of the FW file I downloaded from thew web to a local drive.

Turns out that, for me at least, Safari 5.2 on the Mac (Lion) just doesn't render the ReadyView web app well.

Neither did IE9 or Firefox for Win 7. (Workable but ugly.)

Chrome worked best.

Now I'm cruising in 13TB goodness...

Thanks for the help along the way!
