ReadyNAS Duo v2 - Corrupted Root

Postby schmaler77 » Sat May 19, 2012 2:22 pm

Hello,

I've bought a ReadNAS Duo v2 und I'll use them with two Samsung HD103SJ HDD's (1 TB). In the HCL are these models not listed. RAIDar show me both HDD's with green dots and the device status with a blue dot at the left column. The Info-Column show me the failure message "corrupted root" (in german "Beschädigtes Stammverzeichnis").
Both HDD has worked in a PC before I installed them in my NAS-Device. Before installing I don't formatted them.

What is my problem and how can I solve it.

Greetings from Germany

Matze

Since the disks have been used previously in another system, the NAS will not auto-install on them since there is existing data. You would have to trigger a Factory Default via the boot menu to start the process and erase the old data.

See page 16 of the hardware manual for details on performing the Factory Default: http://www.readynas.com/download/docume ... ept-11.pdf

Hi,
I tried to restore the FactoryDefaults, but after finish, the same message appears. How can I see, that the reformat-process will start. RAIDar shows only "OS-Reinstall", but "formatting" or similar messages doesn't appear.

Another problem, that will occur, I can't use the power switch. After I pressed, the system will not shutdown. It's strange. Probably is that device damaged.

How can I install a newer firmware without using RAIDar? This tool doesn't allowed me to use the setup/config-options.

You can say that having read the article I linked to? Your earlier post talking about an "OS Re-install" seems to suggest you have a v1. The v1 factory reset instructions are here: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu#duo_nv_nv_x6600

Yes, I read them. The device layout looks like a v2. "OS-Reinstall" is the product of a bad translation. One of them messages, which I could read, was FW_Download. In my opinion is that a pre-process before reinstalling.

You do have a v2. An OS Re-install is an alternative to a factory default that doesn't wipe the disks. You need to do a factory default. It's possible I guess that they accidentally used the translation of "OS Re-install" instead of factory default.

The FW_Download message appears when the ReadyNAS attempts to download a firmware update so it can do a clean install of the latest firmware when doing a factory default. If you have a slow internet connection it can take some time for the firmware image to download. It is over 85MB. If the firmware fails to download it should do a factory default with the firmware currently on the flash.

After I choose the Factory-Default-Option the system do nothing and RAIDar tells me quickly my "Corrupted Root"-Error. Now I've started Check-Memory and the Power Button is blinking. I think, that a FW-Download and an update/reinstall will use a lot of time. But in this time, the PW-Button doesn't blink.

You said that you were using these disks on a PC. Before you insert them to your Duo, did you remove the partitions? If not, then possibly that was the cause of the "corrupted root". The system could not recognise the included partitions.

I bought a V2 last week. I also got the FW_Download message on the first boot. I think it was NOT trying to download the firmware from Netgear but was using the default firmware included in the flash. It lasted about 20+ minutes.

When you do a factory default or install new disks into an empty unit the NAS will check for a firmware update and download it (if available) before proceeding to do the factory default. Depending on the speed of your internet connection this can take a while. Downloading the firmware update allows it to do a clean install of the latest firmware. Many units in the supply chain would still have older firmware such as 5.3.1 on them from the factory.

I too have the "corrupted root" message.

As I cannot update the firmware through RAIDar, how do I do it.

I have downloaded the latest RAIDiator 5.3.5 (arm) to my PC.

Now what do I do

Phil, you should be making a new thread on your issue, not tacking on here. Your symptoms may be the same, but cause could be different.

If your system is brand new, and has no data on it, you would need to trigger a Factory Default. That will erase old content on used disks (if y ou put in disks that you used on a PC before).

If you have content on your system, and have been using it for awhile, and only recently ran into this message, contact Technical Support so they can take a look at it.

When you done your factory restart did you do this on your duo v2

Jeep reset button on back pressed in and hold power button untill you see lights come on then release.

Press the backup button untill disk two is only blue light on , then press the reset switch on back again and the device will run and reset.

You will need too wait a few minutes for it to complete.

Took me a while to get mine sorted as I was looking at the wrong info for the factory reset.
