You could do backups over CIFS to that. Frontview backups has the facility to do that.

Would be much better imo to get another Ultra and backup using NFS/Rsync. With another ReadyNAS you could configure the backup unit so that if the main unit breaks down you can quickly turn the backup unit into the main one if you like. Another advantage of getting another ReadyNAS is if it's just the chassis that breaks down (not the disks) you can migrate the disks across. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another (note the Ultra is on the x86 platform).

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Whilst you could probably backup to that Buffalo NAS using the CIFS (Windows\NAS) option in Frontview Backup, I would still recommend a second ReadyNAS for the reasons given above. Whilst it may cost a bit extra, I believe it's worth it, but the choice is up to you.

The new ReadyNAS NV+ v2 may also be worth considering. Whilst you can't migrate disks between the NV+ v2 and the Ultra they are both ReadyNAS units and the NV+ v2 is cheaper than the Ultra. The 5.3.5 firmware for the NV+ v2 adds NFS and Rsync, the protocols which I'd recommend using for NAS to NAS backups. The ReadyNAS is a Linux box after all. Using native Linux protocols for backups between two Linux machines makes a lot of sense.

Do you mean one of these?

http://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/ ... D4000.aspx

just to add, change rate will not be allot, and performance is not a requirement.

this seems to be a good deal: http://www.misco.co.uk/product/192589/N ... Hard-Drive

or this as i dont really need a 1TB disk

Yes that's the new NV+ v2 with the charcoal chassis as opposed to the v1 which was silver.

That's the v1 not the v2. Notice the silver colour of the chassis.

Also the v1.

Although it costs a bit more I'd recommend the v2.

It does not appear to be double the price in the US.

The V1 is slower and is limited to 2 TB disks. I use mine for backup, and it is fine for that. Though restoring a large backup is slower than it would be with one of the newer models.

Newegg has them for $280. There are several suppliers for around $350 (including shipping).

No you cannot replace RAIDiator with a 3rd party OS e.g. Windows. Any damage from attempting to do this would void the warranty.

I noticed a ReadyNAS bundled with OEM Windows Server a while back too. I was surprised that Newegg offered such a bundle.

Anyway the NV+ v2 (RND4000-200) is ARM which isn't compatible with Windows.

Okay, i found a bundle on NewEgg..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.877814

the HDD costs £70 on its own in the UK..

So total fee of £202 - which i think is a bargin!

Now my brother is in Canada this coming Weekend, do additional taxes apply if i were to get it delivered to Canada via New Egg...using new egg canada i guess

The disk in that bundle is not on the Hard Disk HCL. NetGear can and will deny support if you choose to use disks that are not on the compatibility list.

thats typical eh! but thanks for pointing it out.

it is supported for the Ultra 4 - as i have these in my ultra 4.

I guess i could just keep it as a hot spare...and buy new ones for the NV+

though if it comes from the US, i dont think they will cover the warranty in the UK
