NV+ Hangs in Resync (Case #18666437)

Postby DTheDJ » Mon May 28, 2012 5:14 pm

My shares in my NV+ suddenly became unavailable, Firmware 4.1.8 . I tried shutting down the NAS with power button but nothing happened even if the button was hold for a minute. I restarted the NAS by unplugging the power cord but it got stuck in FS check for more than 24h. I then unplugged the cord and rebooted with FS Check by-passed. The NAS finally booted telling me the drive #2 has growing smart errors but all my shares were accessible. However the same issue happened again after a few minutes but this time the NAS always hangs at Resync. The NAS is visible in RAIDar but not with Frontview. RAIDar says “Resync 0% complete, time to finish 6 min, …” and it's been like this for over 24h.

Do you think that replacing the drive #2 will resolve the problem? Is there anything I should do before replacing the drive?

Thank you for your help!

Please open a tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) case and edit the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in the thread) to include your case number. If you have run out of free phone support I'd suggest opening an online case.

Please boot device to "tech support" mode , and forward the port 23. Then we can remote access the system and do further check. Finally, give you a pertinent suggestion. You can PM me the remote access or post that in case.

I checked you NAS,
disk 1 (3QD14QW6) has 134 pending sectors; This disk will failed in the future
disk 2 (3QD0GHM2) has 4797 pending sectors and 24400 ATA error, this is very critical for this disk, you need clone this disk.

1) The best solution is clone diak 1 and disk 2, then used new disk 1&2, original disk 3&4 to reboot it in "skip volume scan" mode;

2) at least, you need clone disk 2, and then used new disk 2, original disk 3&4 ( no disk 1) to reboot it in "skip volume scan" mode;

After unit start, then check your data, if data is OK, for 2), then hot-add a new brand disk to re-sync it.

Disk 1&2 are faulty, as Qinghong said.
Suggest you get two new disks. Clone the disk 1 with new disk 1 (disk 2 is worse than disk 1, so it is better clone the disk 1).
After the clone complete, put disks as below order and boot to telnet for us again.
new disk 1(which cloned from origianl disk 1) in slot 1.
new disk 2 in slot 2.(we'll re-create the raid, so must put a new disk in slot 2).
original disk 3 in slot 3.
original disk 4 in slot 4.

Thank you for you support!
I will get 2 new disks and do as recommended by Rabbie.
Just to make sure I understand correctly:
1. Clone disk 1 with new disk and put new cloned disk in slot 1.
2. Replace disk 2 with new one without cloning
3. Keep disk 3 and 4.
4. Boot directly in tech service mode without doing any prior normal boot.

It's done.
The disk 1 was cloned and replaced and new disk was put in slot 2.
The NAS is now in tech support mode.

Seems failed the disk clone. The new disk 1 still are empty. So origianl disk 1 is also worse. You can try clone again or try clone the disk 2.

FYI, I’m using Acronis to clone the disk.

I tried cloning disk 2 without success; Acronis gave me messages that some sectors could not be read and the task was not completed.

I tried cloning disk 1 again but this time I select “manual mode” and specified to copy data “as is”. The cloning is currently being process… Hopefully it will work this time.

What software do you recommend for cloning? Any special instruction required?
Do I need to format the new drive 2 that stopped cloning half way before to put it the NAS?

dd_rescue is a good free tool. You can use it yourself or you can see if NetGear tech support can do it for you via tech support mode (there may be a fee attached with the latter option).

readysecure1985 wrote:Here is a simple guide to quickly recover a failed drive using dd_rescue.

I often have to deal with pesky failed drives, so here is a quick simple guide how to achieve this with a free Linux Live CD and a PC with two SATA connections.
I will be using a Knoppix 6.2 Live CD for this guide. Can be found at http://www.knoppix.net
Using dd_rescue command allows you to copy data from one drive to another block for block. This is especially useful for recovering a failed drive. Often when a drive fails, the drive is still accessible, it has just surpassed the S.M.A.R.T. error threshold. dd_rescue allows you to ignore the bad sectors and continue cloning the bad drive to a new healthy drive.

1) Connect your old drive and new drive to your PC
2) Boot up using your Linux live CD
3) Launch a terminal window.
4) Run fdisk -l to make sure the system sees both of the hard drives.
5) Run hdparm -i /dev/sdx on both of the drives to find which drive is your source drive and which drive is your destination drive
6) Once you know which drive is which you can start the clone process.

dd_rescue /dev/sdx(source disk) /dev/sdx(destination drive)
7) You will see the process start, just keep an eye on it, it might take a few hours for the clone job to finish, depending on the size of the drive.

Once the process is complete, there will be no notification, the transfer will just stop and you will see the terminal prompt again.

If you see a lot of errors or see that there is no more data being shown as succxfer: it means the drive got marked faulty by the kernel. At this point reboot the system and make sure you know which drive is which again, as it is possible they lettering might switch. Run the dd-rescue command again but this time with -r option. This will start the cloning again but this time will start from the back of the drive and will make sure to get the data that has not been cloned yet.

There is no guarantee this will recover your data, but there is a very high chance this will work and its free…

The 2nd attempt for cloning disk 1 using Acronis is done. As mentioned this time I selected “manual mode” and specified to copy data “as is”.

The disk 2 could not be cloned with Acronis due to bad sectors. So I put the new disk in slot 2 with the partition erased and no formatting.

My NAS is now in tech support mode and I am waiting for further instructions.

Thanks

Thank you for your recommendation, I will try using dd_rescue if my 2nd cloning attempt is not working.
I think it would be very useful if Netgear could add in boot menu an option for cloning a drive. I’m sure it would help a lot of people.
